I found an interesting web site for a Spanish company called Pere Maimi. http://www3.peremaimi.com/ They develop 4x4 upgrades for many vans and medium trucks that don't come from the factory with front drive axles. Pere Maimi also builds custom campers.
For example, here's a Renault Mascott van converted to 4x4:
How about a Nissan Atleon, big brother to the Nissan Cabstar
My favorite is the smallest Fuso Canter. Notice the straight frame rails -- this is not an FG!
Notice the deep offset to the wheels so the single rears line up with the fronts.
See more converted vehicles, including a couple of campers, here
http://www3.peremaimi.com/aplicaciones.htm
The company is happy to do custom work on a vehicle not listed on the web site. "No dude en preguntarnos sobre las distintas posibilidades y soluciones para su vehículo."
These conversions are not cheap, and the relative value of the Euro to the Dollar doesn't help, either. Figure about $25,000 USD to create a unique 4x4 solution.
