Phoenix area: Best Mexican Restaurant

Couldn't get further off-topic on the forum, but we have a deep need for finding a really good Mexican restaurant. I feel like we've tried the whole array here, but I have yet to find one with which I'm satisfied.

Wanna post up your favorite restaurants? Criteria:
  • Phoenix valley,
  • Screaming kid friendly,
  • High quantity,
  • High quality.

Casa Reynoso

AZ has several different types of Mexican food. Sonoran style (Globe, AZ mexican food), New Mexican, Tex Mex...and the more seafood oriented...

I prefer the Sonoran style and would recommend Casa Reynoso -

Located @ Mill/Southern in Tempe. NW corner near the Fry's.

My family has been going there for almost 20 years. It is family owned and operated. You will not be dissapointed. Great family restaurant and reasonable prices...

I highly recommend the "Gollo burro", Machaca tacos, bean burros and green chile.

I also like Blue Iguana and Los Sombreros, both located in South Scottsdale off Scottsdale Rd. These two places have their own style of food, and many seafood dishes as well. Los Sombreros is not as kid friendly though...and they are more expensive than the average mexican restaurant.

Enjoy!

I'm almost afraid to reply here. If you haven't been satisfied with the comida Mexicana in the area . . . where the hell have you been eating? And this is a broad spectrum, BTW. You likely want sit down style with a server, right?

I will suggest 3 Margaritas on Rural and Broadway. That's not "three margaritas" but "tres margaritas," by the way ;) The cheese crisp is so frickin' good you'll crave a cigarette afterwards. The rice is fair. Beef and chicken they use in the burros, enchiladas, and chimis are well seasoned and super yummy. :chowtime:

I suggest you establish some more ground rules . . . Westy is right about the variety of food around.
Just as much, you can't go to a sit down restaurant like Julio G's and order up beef enchiladas with a fat margarita, then compare that meal and experience with greasy tacos-n-beer on an outdoor patio at Guedo's Taco Shop. Just can't be done with a good level of honesty - that's comparing conflicting data.

Care to share the places that haven't been satisfying, and why?

Definitely another vote for Julio G's. Been going there since I was a kid. But like others have said, there are different styles... just depends on what you like. To switch it up a little, I'll go over to Frank and Lupe's on Indian School and Marshall Way (just west of Scottsdale Rd). Also check out Ranch's Market on Central and Southern. They have two different "eateries", the grill outside and the "deli" inside.

Or just drive down Central... tons of great little spots.

After three margaritas, does it matter if the food is good?:shakin:

This isn't of help, I know, but in Tucson some the best Mexican food can be found on the street corners .... mobile food trucks that have their own little territory.

Not particularly. I know it's broad, but I don't mean Tex-mex, I mean I want even like the salsa bars in Puerto Vallarta.

I don't want to go smacking any establishments, but our beloved restaurant ``up North'' with great outside seating must have been bought by a new owner and it went overnight from some of the best food to tasting like canned Walmart food `fresh' from a microwave.

My other super-awesome place on Shea...well, I'm the only one in the family who doesn't come home and get violently ill.

I'm a gourmand, not a gourmet. The French flair given to some comida in another popular Old Town Snottsdale had me double-take and say quoi?

I suggest you establish some more ground rules

Thing is I have none. I'm just looking for all of your tastes and something new to try. Or, throw in some other favorites. Since we moved to Phoenix years ago, we've basically been food-cabin-feverish like Homer in Mountain of Madness due to just young children and where we are in life. It's time (at least temporarily) to get out and try a few things while we still can.

Bahia San Carlos

1-BAHIA SAN CARLOS gets my vote- best sea food ala mexico-get the whole fish deep fried..mmmmm gets me salivating-McDowell rd and 20th st.

2- CAROLINA'S, gets the nod for clean, tasty, fast ,cheap, and authentic.
order at the counter, find your seat and wait shortley to get yummy food.
Cave Creek and Thunderbird rd.

3-LOS DOS MOLINOS- the obsolute best -spicy pork will have you tear for more-no pun intended- very spicy. great atmosphere-original location in Springerville second location in south central and BFE.

4- OXACA- just plain good mexican restaurant-15th. ave and Van Buren-
can you tell I love the " hole in the wall" type joints?

If you are on the east side - Tia Rosa's in Mesa. Several notches above the average mexican fare.

More centrally located - Barrio Cafe. Probably better than Tia Rosa's....

I've been to Phoenix once...? Maybe twice...? but I've heard about Van Buren. My first thought when I read that was, "that must be some dive."

Like Halstead Street in Chicago, Peachtree Ave in Atlanta and John Street in Philadelphia (;)), some streets have a legend all their own.

In my opinion, places like Julio Gs, Julio Too's, Ajo Al's, Carlos O Briens are all about the same. They offer average mexican food. It's all about in the same boat...same menu choices etc..

Another recommendation is a place in N. PHX called El Conquistador. Extremely clean restaurant with some quality mexican food. Good family place too.

75 ave/ lower buckeye

theres a semi permanant roach coach/ restuarant there, next to a fruit and vegetable stand. Its about as close as Ive found to being in Mexico. Real good stuff. Closed on wednesdays. I stop there for lunch when in the area. Dont think I'd want to be there at night.
