"Planet Earth"

I had the pleasure of watching "Planet Earth" on Discovery HD. For any of you that have not seen the series, I highly recommend doing so. It is the most educational, motiviating and amazing show ever to be put on TV. I am not sure if I am in the right folder for this thread, but the producers are definitley "Making a Difference". If you are not motivated to see our world, this series is your motivation. If you aren't motivated to protect our planet, this is your motivation. If you aren't motivated to "Make a Difference", this is your motivation. Even if you aren't a person that likes to rot his or her brain in front of a TV, this series is a must see experience. I thought I'd post to see what others peoples thoughts are on the series and how it effected them. So If you've seen it, let me know what you think......If you haven't, go watch it and start "Making a Difference".

It's all about motivation and caring - we'll see if we can order it from Netflix, since we don't have TV reception - or a TV (we watch movies on our Macs or projected on the screen via LCD - six feet wide )

Isn't this Attenborough's next great project? He's amazing for bringing the wonder of our planet closer to all people.

Which is what overlanding is all about - even if it's just the next county.

I must say, while they captured some spectacular footage, overall I was a bit disappointed in the depth of the content. They seemed to skim over the top, and not dig into any sort of detail. The Sonoran Desert segment seemed like it lasted about 5 minutes..."it is hot, then it rains, then a saguaro sucks up the water and lives for a long time". Kinda left me wanting more....a lot more.

It also left me wanting more, but there is only so much they can cram into an episode. The show had unprecedented filming techinques, locations and footage of wildlife never filmed before. The use of camera speed combined with the patience of the camera men was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend watching it in high definition as I don't think basic cable does the color and detail justice.

A mountain of guano covered in cockroaches, what could be better LOL.
Seriously though I love the series, and find it truely moving. The footage of the lions taking down an elephant at night was simply incredible. The most poignant part of the series for me though was watching the polar bear struggling, falling through the sea ice, then forced to swim miles from land out in the open ocean in search of food.

Beyond the beauty and images of the series I think the producers did an outstanding job of showing the viewer just how fragile our world is and how interconnected we all are with this blue marble we call home.

I too thought it was one of the best shows ever shown on t.v. I now have cable and a t.v. after eight years of no cable service. I am glad I have the discovery chanel.. I just hate the rest of the junk on the box.

I don't want to sound like I think they did a bad job, I liked what I saw...there just wasn't enough detail IMO. It felt like a really long movie trailer.

While I haven't seen every episode, it is really amazing.

I remember hearing/reading that it took something like 3 years of filming to complete. Patience.


But very a very good show.
The only bad side is I see new places I now want to visit. (as if my list wasn't already long enough)

Just another plug for Planet Earth. I got this 5 disc DVD over the summer, and it's truly a gem. My daughter is watching a section right now, and so I thought I'd toss it out there.

Planet Earth

My kids (3.5 and 6) specifically request it over the "normal" kid movies, and will watch it over and over (if given the chance). Visually stunning (and never gory), superb narration by David Attenborough, and just a great cross-section of the Earth's many wonders. Since we got it, my wife and I have given it to both our families and everyone loves it.

If you're looking for a last minute gift for someone, it's a great buy.
