potential trooper purchase

Having just bought a gigantic old town car known as The White Whale, I need something cheap to use when the weather is bad. Found this. Haven't seen it or contacted seller about it but probably will today. Think it would be worth the risk if I can get it for $1000? It's in the rust belt... There are a million Cherokees around, but I like to be different. Just need it to run and have heat. :ylsmoke:

I don't know anything about Troopers...

But, in the last few days I have been reading about them here on ExPo, and I am intrigued. Do you know what the seller means by "needs some work?" I think if you bought it for $1000 and budgeted another $1000 to immediate repairs, it might be an inexpensive ride. I'd definitely get a mechanic to look it over first.

You might need to consider how much you are willing to lose, worst case scenario. You could always take it to the scrap yard and get $400 bucks for it, or maybe some people on here would want you to part it out for them if it turned out to be a dud.

PlanetIsuzu.com is a good resource.

I would say for that price yes definitely. There is very little that goes wrong with these, it has the GM 2.8 V6 and with that milage there is a lot of miles left in it, I don't know what they mean by it needs a little work but I'm betting it is nothing serious the drive train is nearly bullet proof and as far as rust the frames do have some rust issues but as long as it doesn't have holes in or pieces falling off it is fine for what you want it for. My 89 Trooper V6 has 248,000 and is still going strong. Dave PS if it did go south on you in the future and I could find a way to ship the trans I would buy it. It is the only spare part I do not have but then I've never heard of one failing either.

I know how you should mod the Town Car.

I was wondering how I was going to get the four wheeler and dirt bike to the dirt park- problem solved!

I have yet to hear what is wrong with it, but I can fix a good amount of things myself. I have a mechanic that would look it over too. There seems to be people that think the 2.8 is garbage, and some think it is bullet proof. I guess it depends on how it has been cared for... I will probably buy two totally different vehicles next year anyway, so a winter's worth of use would be good enough.

Troopers have box frames that can rust from the inside out. Stick your fingers in any frame hole you can find. If the frame is good all else can be fixed.

So I would just be feeling for rust? Hmmm... What about the AC? I don't use it a lot but if I have the kids in it, it's sometimes necessary. I assume at this age they use R12, not R134. Retrofitting possible? Or at that point maybe I should just find something newer...

Talked to the owner last night. He says it runs, but it runs bad as speed increases...which is pretty vague. Plus the fan doesn't work, which means it can't very well be a winter beater until that is fixed too. I will probably go look at it this weekend.

Just looking at the CL ad it looks like it has newer BFG AT's which would cost a good chunck of change to put on there. So thats definitely a positive, cause if it needed tires thats a good $600-$800 right out of the box.
As far as the engine running rough as the speed increases, I would have a diagnostic ran on it and see what codes are being thrown before I bought it, it could be as simple as plugs and wires or a vacuum leak somewhere. On the 87 trooper I had...about 14 years ago it kept blowing a spark plug. I would put a new one in it and about 5 miles later it would blow, and I could always feel when it happened cause of the misfire and loss of power. This was a 4cyl though not the v6. Anywho I ended up dumping about $1400 to fix the issue...I cant remember exactly what it needed as it was over 14years ago and I wasnt big into fixing my truck myself just beating the ******* out of it lol.

I noticed that most of the carpet that been pulled, that kinda makes me wonder if the p.o. has had it completely submerged in water and pulled the carpet out after, if so the engine issue could be related.

On a side note I would buy some rolls of industrial rubber mats and custom fit it to floor, that would look sweet and not to expensive also bery functional. Or even cheaper I found large cargo rubber mats at sam's for $20. I thought about buying a few of them and cutting them to custom fit my rig.

I think the highest I would go on this thing would be $1200, because it has at least $700 worth of newer tires.

Are parts still pretty much available for these? I did some searching and it appears there are, but just because you can see them doesn't mean they are available. Like my 1975 Honda Elsinore dirt bike... you can see all the parts listed, but a lot of them are no longer available.

Some things like factory weatherstripping (expensive) is drying up. But most mechanical parts that break or wear can be had. On Planetisuzu we have a good source or 2 for OEM factory stuff. The biggest issue is aftermarket bolt ons. Not much out there any more for accesories. But all the important stuff can be had. Suspensions ect. Try Independant4x or Calmini. Old Man Emu makes great suspension stuff for these trucks. There is also a lot of parts interchangeablity between different models. Mechanically my Pickup and Trooper are more the same than different. Lot's of cool tricks like using the big front brakes off a 2nd gen Trooper on a 1st gen. It's a bolt on and makes a big difference.

If you are mechanical and can do it yourself they are fun and cool trucks to work on. If you have to pay someone maybe not so much. Just rember the 1st gens are 25 years old. Rubber lines and such will need to be replaced.

I am relatively good with fixing things. Diagnosing problems is not my strong suit, but this would be a 2nd vehicle anyway so fixing it quickly isn't always necessary. I hate to join forums for vehicles I haven't bought but I joined Planet Isuzu so I can snoop around. I think I will look at it tomorrow.
