hey,

we are two german industrial students and we want to present you our project of a mobile wind turbine.

we want to know if u think this wind turbine is a useful equipment for expeditions or travels.
Maybe its imaginable in a completely different context of use.
we are happy about every usefull comment.

The projekt is made to give an alternative to traditionell gasoline-operated generators.
When its assembled its 12 m high and produces 3,5 kW ( in case of good wind conditions ).
The speacial thing about this wind turbine is its mobility. Its very easy to built up within 20 min.
The following visualisations should give you an impression of what we are planing.

sorry but the explanations on the pictures are not translated yet, i hope its understandable.

The generator is not fixated at the pylon. A winch drags it up and down. This solution makes the assembling much easier. Another innovation is the carbon pylon, which is rotatable and prestressed like pylons on sailing ships. The result of these decisions is an extremly stressable and lightweight pylon.

After disassembling you can transport eyerthing in two packages. One with the six pylonsegments and the rotorbaldes ( around 20 kg) and one box with the generator (40 kg)

This seems like a light weight.

Do you have a homepage for the project?
What is the output at various windspeeds?

that thing is a bit big for overlanding i think... but would be great for a basecamp setup, cabin or other longer stay site.

A wind turbine is not much use for overlanding because a vehicle driven regularly (~daily) can charge the batteries from the alternator and/or solar.
Also, small wind turbines (small swept area), in general, don't harvest a lot of watts without a lot of wind.

But, as Cody says, for a basecamp it could be very nice to have...IF...it had a nice heavy battery as well. Without a battery, then it would be of almost no use.
So...130kg for the generator...and perhaps another 20kg (or more) for the battery.

I can see a use perhaps for military. They like to put radio trucks on high ground.
And, of course you must have already thought of sailboats. Though I think perhaps a windlass at the bottom might be an option rather than an electric winch on the generator housing.
