prototype disaster.

so my friend and i came up with this great idea for a computer in a car. not just a fancy built in comp, but a rugged durable storage device. a place to dump pics of your memory cards or get online. so heres what we had.

we contacted hp and got a decent computer that basically has no moving parts. no spinning hard drive, so it can jostle around without crashing. the only thing that would have caused problems is dust and over heating. but the case was removable and it was easy to clean. this piece of equipment was about $400.

then we had a simple operating system of windows xp. the mouse was a stationary roller ball so there was no need for a flat surface. there were 6 usb jacks for miscellaneous things like i pods, cameras, and gps units.

heres the disaster. we couldn't find a decent screen. we were hoping for an in dash, or dash mounted screen. the biggest we could find was 7" have you ever tried to read a start menu on a 7" screen? yeah its impossible. so we are still researching our options.

the idea was to create a small, compact, durable, computer that could be installed in any vehicle for minimal cost, even cheaper than a laptop; and be easier to operate by applying home world technology in a vehicle (windows) this would make it much easier to understand.

anyway. if anyone has an idea as to how we can resolve this problem i would like to hear it. i don't really want to rewrite the software to fit it to the 7" screen.

Start here and check out the various sized screens....standard and touch screen.
I was considering a similar set up (Mac-based) for my other vehicle 6 months ago but have been side-tracked.

As a person you runs a laptop in my rig full time I can tell you that a toughbook is a better choice for me than a built in laptop for various reasons...
1) easy to remove for theft protection
2) bright screen...I currently have a 15 screen but i am shopping for 1 of the smaller ones...this with a rugged portable HD gives tons of storage space
3) complete unit, no other parts to source
4) easy parts sourcing...not something custom that I have to dig parts for

so instead of a built in unit I would look at a laptop mount from jeniko.com and a toughbook or something like that
just my thoughts

I did one back around 2002-2003. I used a via Mini ITX board with integrated CPU that runs fanless and has a TV out jack. This made it possible to use a cheap screen designed for in car dvd players. I put it all in a 1U half width rack case for $50. Used a 12v in power supply from mini box. Mine looked similar to the 1/2 width 1U system that is sold by minibox.
Looks like they have expanded their product line and have what you need.
