Push Button Start

Starting my Monty is becoming a crap a shoot. Hit the ignition key and maybe the engine will turn over or maybe it won't.

I know the issue is with the key barrel going south and really don't want to replace it. Thinking about installing a push button start system that requires the key to be ignition to work. Not interested in installing a remote start, would just like to install a relay and momentary switch.

Wondering if anyone has done this mod and maybe has a diagram?

Thanks

Are you sure its not the ignition switch? I've replaced it on all 3 of my older trucks. Common problem. The key barrel and lock housing are zinc castings and don't wear much. the Ignition switch is plastic. Its about about a $40 part and simple to replace.

What PLH said. Its like a 10 minute fix at most.

Also, is the issue more prevalent after you have driven a bit, parked for a minute and try to start again?

Thanks for the responses guys.

It's and equal opportunity issue - not more prevalent after driving a bit.

On my last Montero, I had the same issue. Swapping the ignition switch did not solve problem. Still have the new switch laying around guess it's worth a shot.

On old Montero, ended just letting switch hang under the steering and used a flat head screwdriver or key to start rig.

Check the leads to your starter down below. I had intermittent issues where it would take two key turns to get a start every now and then. I thought it was the starter solenoid but when I went to check it out I found a loose lead. I cleaned and tightened everything and the problem went away.

On the gen II ignition switch remove it from the truck. Carefully unclip the white cover. You will see 2 copper plates that are stacked together. Take the one off and clean the raised portions with sandpaper or emery cloth to remove the carbon build up. You will need to clean both plates. Smooth out the contacts. My switch has some groves from being old. No worries the plates are thick enough to remove any digits. Pay careful attention to the black portion there are springs and ball bearing that act as a detent. After cleaning both plates reassemble. Ignition switch ready for another 200k. It takes maybe 20 mins total.
