Hello Sam, Yes this unit permits SMS as well as VMS. Here's a link I just found to a company that sells new and refurb units. They list the phones capabilities. Is it E911 compliant ? Will it be compatible to the Globalstar second-generation satellite constellation? What cellular band is it?

Hello,

I believe I bought this unit in 2002. The GSP-1600 is not E911 compliant. Globalstar has an emergency call center that you can call and you can give them your location info and they will track down the nearest Public Safety Answering Points. There is a feature in the Globalstar phone which, when activated, displays on the handheld phone's screen the approximate geographic coordinates of the most recent call.

The GSP-1600 will be compatible with Globalstars 2nd Gen Satellites. I believe they are scheduled to launch 6 new ones this summer/fall. They launched 6 new ones in 2010.

Tri-mode: Satelitte, CDMA (IS-95) & AMPS (IS-41) Also SMS & VMS capable.

Thanks I think since it is not E911 compatable , the cellular side (CDMA) cannot be programed with service. AMPs is obsolete . So this is a Singlemode Sat phone.

How is the Sat service ? How long does it take to get a signal ?

The cellular service (if available) is enabled when sat service is unable to be located. This happens automatically. I've been on sat service in northern baja when this occured. I've found some forums that discuss how cellular service works with Globalstar.

The satellite service worked great for me when I went from Denver to Cabo San Lucas (and back) in 2002. I also used it in Italy as well with no problems. As I recall, It normally takes 15-20 seconds to link up with 4 sats and the voice quality was great.

I have been doing some research. If this handset is not capable of E911 complance then the cellular portion of the phone cannot be programmed.
The Globalstar satellite system is still being rebuilt so the service is still not very good.

Due to gaps in coverage associated with the current Globalstar satellite network, our price on used Globalstar GSP-1600 units and monthly service is drastically reduced.

70.00 is a good price compared to the other used handsets on the market.

Sorry sounds like the service is a little to unreliable for the moment.

Yep, last used it in 2002. Just trying to clear out some stuff after my move. GlobalStars service should be quite good after they get those next six satellites up.
