Question for those with rtt and adjustable platform

Hey everyone

I'm trying to get some steel ordered for my rtt on my m416 trailer. Curious of the size and gauge you used? I'm thinking that I will weld some square tubing in a u shape to the four corners of the trailer frame then come up with square tubing that slides inside one another to have an adjustable platform for the tent. My main questions are the size tubing you used and what gauge it was. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've searched back through almost every thread in the past year and can't find any references to the size/gauge of tubing used......can someone help me out a little here???

I'd go local for the steel. You'll save on shipping, and chances are really good that the places around Memphis that sell steel do fab work too. They can probably guide you to what you need for the weight you'll be supporting. And if not, they'd know an old welder in town who could tell ya that and a lot more about your project for a cold beer.

yeah the buying of the steel isn't a problem. I just don't know what size/gauge to purchase.

Don......I'm going to have a sheetmetal cover made and am now leaning towards mounting it direct on the cover but would still like to have some adjustable racks for possibly carrying either the tent or some kayaks on top.

I built a sort of truck bed rack knock off to mount in my trailer to permanently mount my RTT on (also used it to run electrical wiring up to the tent). Its a little on the heavy side, but I used 2 x 2 .120 wall steel tubing. Up in the tent , my wife, 7 year old son and I have slept many a night without any movemnt or flex. It worked out, using this size, that I was also able to mount rocker switches right into my tubing. I tucked them up under and out of the way, but also very asy to reach. This allows me to turn on the LED lights I mounted to the underside of the rack to illuminate the bed as well as the flood lights off the back of the trailer. I have found this size (2 x 2), although heavy, tyo give me the greatest flexability to make mods to the rack when I get ideas from all of you.

Sorry I had not been able to respond to your PM yet. The square tube on mine that is attached to the trailer was 1 1/4" IIRC with 1/8" wall. The rack tubing that slides inside is 1" with 1/8" wall.

The platform itself is also the 1" with 1/8" wall.

I have wondered if round stock would have been better for the lift part itself, but it would have been a bit harder to work with. So far it has been fine though.

I bought my steel locally, was cheaper in the end.

thanks for the info guys. I'm having a top fabricated now but I'm going to think about how I want it set up to carry the kayaks. I think having something adjustable/removable would be nice for times when I don't need it.

i have another mount i use for the trailer to carry a roof rack or kayaks or mt bikes or ???. weld on 4 tabs with a nut welded to back side, then mix and match tis modular system to suit the needs of the day. Permits multi uses of trailer with little hassle to swap over. Here is trailer with rack that with 4 bolts comes off the and load bars then support kayak mounts, etc. Once I taught myself to weld, it opened up a whole world of possibilities. if you can imagine it, you can do it.

Same for front deck-- fuel/propane tray easily removed w/ 4 bolts. (trailer now fully rino coated-- there are b4 pix)

Mine will get 4 - 1 1/4" "receivers" 2 on each side that will allow me to pin into place a rack to put the kayaks above my RTT while travelling and quickly get them out of the way when at camp.

well the steel is ordered and the sheetmetal shop called and they have my top for the trailer fabricated. If I receive the steel today I should have a busy weekend. :)

Please post up pics when it's done

will do. I have a small build thread going and will add it to that. The steel is going to be delivered on Tuesday and today I received my top cover for the trailer so it's going to start coming together some next week.
