Question on roof top boxes / gear

When it comes to road noise / whistling from roof platforms in general is it best to mount stuff as close to the front at possible or set it back a bit From the leading edge of platform? Example, if you were mounting Pelican boxes do you think boxes mounted on first cross bar and and as close to front of cab or box mounted one cross bar back would make the least amount of noise?

When I put crap on the roof of my Xterra years ago it really didn't matter where it went, it was noisy reguardless. I ended up having a buddy make an air dam to redirect the air up and over.
