Questions regarding 2015 Land Cruiser

Hey everyone!

This is my first post on this forum and I cannot say enough good things about it. I am in the midst of selling my house and preparing to move out west (I live in Louisville, KY). I am in a bit of a dilemma right now with my current ride. Currently, I have a 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, with 95,xxx miles on it, that I have been restoring for last year or so (bought it for $3,500). I have had it fuel injected, lifted (4inches, 31in All-terrains) and just the standard replacement of all broken parts (water pump, tranny, radiator, and a few others). It has been a pretty good DD for what it is. It has left me stranded a couple of times, but no biggie. It has no rust, so I don't have any of those issues; however, I seem to into a mechanical problem every month or so - whether is it a random oil leak, interior lights not working, gauges not working properly, etc.

I am having a very hard time deciding if I should put a lot of money into my Waggie to try and make it as reliable as possible. I like the idea of being able to take either the Waggie or Land Cruiser offroad, but also want to keep it practical. My other thought it go ahead and just bite the bullet and buy a new car (2015 Land Cruiser is what I want if not the Waggie) and not have to worry about reliability as I start my next chapter in life. I have made a big pro's and con's list for each vehicle but I am still unfamiliar with the Toyota brand, much less Land Cruisers. I love old school iron like no other, but I really do miss all the creature comforts of new cars along with the fact of better drivetrain than what I currently have. Crappy MPG doesn't bother me as much as only have a 200-250 mile range on my current ride.

For those who own a current 200 series Land Cruiser, can y'all give me some advice, info on these things. What are their biggest issues? Do these rigs really run "forever" if well taken care of. I am not naive and realize every car has its issues; I just need some words of wisdom of what I am getting myself into before I make the commitment to purchase a new Land Cruiser. I am dead set on either keeping my Waggie or getting a 2015 Land Cruiser. I also understand the aftermarket support is limited to the new Land Cruiser right now compared to my Waggie.

Here is a pic of my Waggie:

Nice looking waggy! Do you realize the Landcruiser is an $80k car?

Well aware of the pricing...there are quite a few of them that are now (15 model) in the low 70k area now that the 2016 models are starting to appear on lots. If I decide to get the Land Cruiser, I will be selling my Jeep and use that money towards the Land Cruiser.

The LC is heavy duty and high quality. Extensive parts network, some after-market available. If I had the choice, hands down a new (er) LC over an old Jeep.

If you have that kind of cash, then absolutely get the land cruiser. Wagoneers weren't particularly reliable even straight off the showroom floor, so the cruiser will be a huge improvement over even a rebuilt jeep.

ih8mud.com has an entire forum devoted to the 200 series.

thats where you want to be reading. I'm sure everything you are curious about has been answered.

Are you sure you won't regret getting rid of the Waggie? I so often wish I would have kept some of my past cars once they are gone. Maybe check a couple year old Land Cruiser. Just my 2cents

Your Wagoneer is beautiful.

I have owned a lot of vehicles for my time. A great number of them have been trucks. The 200 is without a doubt, the finest vehicle I have ever owned. Aside from MPGs, there is nothing that the 200 does not do well for me. It is very capable off-road and it is a phenomenal choice for road trips (aside from the range). It is the perfect size for my family of 4 and it flies for it's respective mass.

+1 for the 200 forum on ih8mud. Lots of good 200 info over there.

I traded a quigley e350 for my 200. It was an excruciating decision...up until I pulled out of the dealership in my new 200. I got a great deal on my 200, most people don't realize how much some dealers are willing to negotiate on these trucks since many of them end up sitting on lots.

If you can handle the MPGs and the purchase price I would pull the trigger. Feel free to ask of you have any specific questions, always happy to help. Good luck.

Just a thought, with such a neat Waggy that you've put so much time/effort and money into. Why not both. Buy a few year older 200 and the saving will likely offset most/all money you would net from the sale of the Waggy. Dedicate the Waggy for more serious offroad (if you desire) and have the 200 for daily driving and overlandish travel.

If he drives the wagoneer I'm sure he's not worried about mpg. Those things were not known for being economical.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I've bookmarked the www.ih8mud.com forum and will start checking that out. With gas prices as cheap as they are and going to be for a while, MPG is on the bottom of the list of things to worry about.

I vote for finding a low mile used 200 and keep the Heep as well. Those fullsize Jeeps are super cool, and starting to get harder to find. Especially rust free ones. But no matter how you get there, you won't regret going to a Land Cruiser!
