Has anyone had/known someone who had one of the tents at
www.racktent.com ? I am looking specifically at their expedition model. If they are comparable to the hannibal/eezi-awn tents at $825 it would drastically improve my chances of getting one! Thanks
Mat

Right now with RTT's you get what you pay for. I'd predict that in 3 years the Chinese made tents will be up to par with the current Eezi Awn, Hannibal, Howling Moon, and Technitop tents.

There is one factory in China producing all the RTT's and they all exhibit identical manufacturing problems. Even the ARB RTT's made there have been pulled off the shelves due to QC.

Right now I think your best choices are to either wait until the Chinese made tents get the QC under control and use the correct fabrics, or buy one of the big names.

Either way it's a lot of money, but I'd prefer to spend my money on a proven product with a long life span.

We have this tent. It's just under a different name. Car-top-tent.com. I know the quality isn't 'as good' as the larger manufacturers but it works perfect for us. I agree with Martyn, as in there not there yet with their QC, but in time they'll be there. It's 100 times better than their last model. Mel over at ctt has worked well with us getting any parts that we may need when something goes wrong. We camp once a month. Our Expedition tent is probably being used more than any other one out there right now. One of the ladders extensions was damaged upon UPS arrival.. he sent a whole entire ladder and extension out right away for free.. no questions asked. Also, I just received a new cover and straps from them because the old cover is getting tired and the straps broke. Free yet again. I can't speak enough about Mel's service.

Other than that.. the tent has had zero problems and IMHO It all comes down to what you can afford. If i had the money to do a Overland or a Eezi awn would i? yes. I think they're a tad better. Will we sell ours one day and upgrade? You betcha. Is it in the budget right no do to so? No. Hence the car-top-tent.

Yeah when the Hannibal gets old and frail I will replace with Hannibal or Eezi Awn. I like the function and since they are so similar I wouldn't mind either. Will obviously depend on availability at the time.

Hey Limey, (feels odd starting a conversation this way)

Give me a call and we can chat about the tent. Martyn is right, it probably takes 3 years to get the bugs worked out of a tent, luckily this tent, after the Car-Top-Tent initial run has been around about that many years and they have been able to work out the bugs. There is also a Poly Cotton option now, which is great for folks that appreciate the traditional materials.

The older tents are proven and have been the mainstay of the industry for years. I have much respect for these tents and will never tell someone they areaking a poor decision by choosing one. I do feel that the expedition tent has 90-100% of the benefits (depending on opinions) without the cost. All components are orderable as spares so if you run it into a garage, we can get you spare parts for an easy fix.

Feel free to call me,
Todd

I'm sitting right next to one of those tents right now, and I'm quite impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of materials, especially for the price. I was a bit skeptical of the 300D nylon, but it is very heavy duty material. They should send out free fabric samples. It's hard buying something like that off of the internet without having seen or touched one, but I have no regrets. My only gripe would be that the cover is a little akward getting on and off, but I think it just takes practice.

I believe Todd ^^ has many happy customers with the PNWOS.

I have come across a lot of negative reviews of those tent cots from serious users regarding shabby QC and poor design.

You wouldn't be referring to *ME* would you? :)

As far as this thread is concerned... I can vouch for the fact that they are very easy to rebuild.

Anyone know anything about replacing crushed gutters?

If it makes you feel any better, I once crashed a row boat on top of my VW microbus into a Bank of America parking garage door way.

Did you say microbus? That was my first car... my Dad bought it new in '67. Here he is in the late 70s wrenching on it. Whatever happened to the beanbag anyway? Every mechanic should have one of these.

Sorry about the hijack... but you mentioned the microbus, not me. ;)

Don't get me wrong I've been looking for a superior inexpensive RTT for years. If I can find one I'd have no problem selling them. From what you're saying it sounds like you have exactly that, if so I'd like to have a look at one. PM me so we can arrange to see one.

No worries Martyn, I've drooled over your trailers for years and understand your need to only represent the best. You've got a great reputation and certainly want to keep it that way.

Just tried your shop phone, leaving a PM now.

Take care
