radiator leak can it be repaired

I am posting for my son-in-law and asking for direction. His 1995 Landcruiser 6cyl 4.5L "1FZFE" has sprung a leak. I have not seen this leak as they live 3 hours from me. He said he discovered the leak when he arrived at work yesterday. He states the leak is coming from the connection between the top plastic tank and where the aluminum tabs fold over to connect.

Do you think he can patch / fix with anything like JB weld? If he needs to replace is their an inexpensive vendor you guys use? I might spring for another Christmas present for them.

This pic shows me nothing but it's what he sent:

Needs to get out more
The 1FZ hates to overheat. I would skip any JB Weld, and contact American Toyota in NM and order up a new one for them. Sit down, and put on your seatbelt, they are expensive. Much cheaper than rebuilding a fried motor though...

My 1/4 of a cent.

An aftermarkey Koyo radiator would be at least half of what a Toyota one will cost. Make sure he buys new hoses as well.

I just did this job

I just replaced mine for similar problem.

My upper tank had developed a hairline crack and slow leak. Removed radiator and took to a local shop. They ordered a replacement upper tank but, upon seeing mine disassembled, the tech thought mine was degraded enough that they couldn't warranty the work.

I ended up buying a factory replacement from Crusier Dan at amercian Toyota (1-800-432-6668, ask for Cruiser Dan or Dan Busey, leave a voicemail and he gets back to you, square deals, good advice), which was about 480$ plus shipping. High price, but much cheaper than local Toyota parts, and I didn't want to mess around with something that didn't fit like factory.. this truck takes me and the family long distances and to occassionally remote site so, cheap insurance in my book.

While your son has this out he has easy access to: fan and fan clutch, belts, hoses (there are three, two lower and one upper) and the PS pump/hoses.. which are prone to slow leaks at higher mileage.. and thermostat/gasket (very easy replace, no RTV required)

I rebuilt my PS pump while I had the rad out, very easy job for a novice with the FSM instructions, and more cheap (40 dollar kit from CDan) insurance.

Hope that helps.. PM me if he has questions.

X2.
Get the Koyo # C1917. It is the one for the 93-94. Three core instead of the A1918 which is the one for the 95-97. It is a 2 core. They both bolt up the same. The three core just holds more coolant.

When I replaced my original radiator with the Koyo, The side by side comparison was a perfect match.
