Rear facing seats?

I'm thinking about turning the first bench around to face the second bench and putting a table in between, on my E350. Has anyone done this? VW vans came with rear facing seats, as did some station wagons. Is is safe to ride that way?

As long as they are secured properly and the seat belts are installed correctly it would be safe, but not everybody prefers a rearward seating position while in motion.

It is actually safer that way, but, as mentioned, some people don't like traveling backwards.
