Rectangular Fuel Tank Mounting?

I'm considering replacing the stock fuel tank on my '04 FG with a rectangular one. The stock tank is about 16" in diameter, and it looks like roughly 18 x 18 is the closest rectangular tank that's readily available without doing something totally custom. I'd prefer to not have a new tank sticking out the additional 2 inches if possible, so am wondering if those rectangular mounting boxes that currently sit between the stock tank and the frame are really necessary. And if so, do they really need to be that wide? Could a new tank's mounting brackets just safely be bolted directly to the frame instead (using the same holes those two boxes currently use)?

My thoughts are don't drill any holes in the frame and just as long as it's secured strong enough for a hard crash you should be fine.

If you have access to an Isuzu NPR, have a look at how the tank is mounted on them, as they use an OEM rectangular tank.
