Recycling Old (stock) Parts?

What do you guys do with the parts you remove from your 4x4 during a build? After replacing running boards with rock slides, bumpers, and stock (thin) skidplates with the real thing, I had a considerable pile of plastic and steel.

In the past with my full sized trucks it was mostly stock front and rear bumpers which I left at the fabricators when picking-up/installing the new iron. My two recent builds with more than just bumpers being removed (2005 TJ Rubicon & 2006 4Runner) I had piles of stuff in my shop.

I sold the Jeep a year ago to a friend and gave him all the stock parts and some other accessories, which he wanted. The 4Runner's pile of big plastic bumpers, skid plates, and the stock tow hitch receiver have been sitting on my floor for several months taking up space.

Surely I could have sold the pieces for more money if I had cared to expend the time to advertised and sell them (Craig’s List?). But really I just wanted them out of my shop and to be used instead of trashed. Instead of paying to 'dump' them I contacted (in person) the owner of a body shop that I know does a fair amount of Toyota repairs. I told him I didn't want much for the parts, that he could make me an offer. Yesterday I hauled the 8-foot bed full of stuff to the body shop. He offered me $75.00, I said how about $100.00. Deal.

He will likely make/save lots of money using some of these parts over buying new, of course he has to sit on the parts until he needs them. $100.00 doesn't sound like a lot, maybe he got the better end of the deal, but I'm happy I didn't have to toss them.

Those parts took up enough floor space to park a large motorcycle.

Yeah, the eternal problem of the dirtbag pack rat.

Personally, I sold or gave away bumpers. My rear bumper I took in for scrap and the front bumper was worth $20 to someone on Craigslist. My front was in good shape, no rust or dents, the back was bad, bad, bad. Regular parts (wheel bearings, brakes, sensors, ball joints, etc.) I keep as trail spares if they are not yet failed, otherwise they go in with scrap or recycling. Most anything else I've taken off or replaced is stacked on shelves (old block, head, steel wheels, boxes of things like a radiator, heater core, etc.) or sitting in the basement (the original bench seat and back jump seats). At more than one point over the years all I would need is a frame and a few pieces of sheet metal to build a second truck. I get buried in parts and once in a while give away or recycle some, but they still keep piling up. Like my original steering damper (run an OME now), why the heck I still have that, I dunno. I have about 3 pairs of wipers, no idea. That old center driveshaft carrier bearing, replaced because it wobbled, no reason to keep it but yet there it is. Shrug. My original 4.10 ring and pinions, bearings and diff are sitting in the ARB Air Locker boxes. Why? It's not like I would ever put worn out original gears back in my truck.

I have a simple rule of thumb that I try to apply evenly. Assuming a replacement can easily be found, could I have replaced it for what it would have cost to store it at a mini-storage?

What I need to learn is how to actually follow thru on that. :)

This is timely, 'cuz I have a bunch of stuff to get rid of!

Has anyone tried taking to a dismantler's/salvage yard for a credit?

I do that up here I have taken a few scrap vehicles with good parts on them to a local junk yard that has suzukis. He has basically said if I need anything short of an engine to go get it for free! Saved me buying a new AC compressor not long ago!

Exactly. Almost new parts that I will never use again on my modified 4x4 but that someone else can use and even make a profit on.
