Hi!

Question for the Land Rover experts out there...

How difficult is it to replace the bulkhead on a 1993 NAS Defender 110?

Are-they available in the USA (OEM or aftermarket)? If so, for how much?

thanks

They used to be available and cheap. I have one in my Series III that a built back in '99. I've checked all the part numbers and have made a couple inquires lately and they seem almost impossible to get from either Rovers North or the dealers. That was the case a couple months ago anyway.

Britannica Restorations in Quebec had three for sale a few months ago. You might want to give them a call but I'd bet they're gone by now.

Ask this question over on D-90. I had to remove mine due to engine fire damage, and took the opportunity to swap to vented bulkhead. Glad i did too because I always wanted vents, and as you know the NAS 110's didn't come with vents. also gives you a reason to swap to the later model underdash A/C, superior to the original NAS version. If you ever wanted to do these, now is the time.

I purchased a semi-complete used euro LHD bulkhead from Britannica to replace mine. It came bent and had to be straightened, which wasn't disclosed up front.

I would start with Mike at ECR and George at Rovers Down South.

Good luck.

thanks

i contacted them - we'll see.

How involving is it to replace it? i assume it's a huge job, but how big?

I also have another question.

What type of 5 speed transmission do they come with?
Are-they expensive to replace and easy/difficult to find?

Sorry I would ask on D-90 but I don't have much time right now to sign up and do all the proper search on the forum before I ask a question because if you just ask without searching there's always someone to say "do a search" which I find really annoying....and by then the Defender I am looking at will probably be sold...

:sport_box

so in the meantime if anyone has input feel free to share..

:)

thanks!

Replacing a bulkhead isn't that "difficult" but it'll be time consuming. It's not precision work like rebuilding an engine but you'll want to document the removal process exactly and take as many photos of each assembly, wire harness, tube, hose, etc. as you need to be able to reinstall each one onto the new bulkhead.
As for sources, the previously listed are a good start.
Even if you think you don't have time you should join D90.com; it's a great resource plus it may help you find a bulkhead.

well...

I took a look at the Defender tonight. Here's the listing:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/car/427459721.html

It does need a bulkhead allright. But there is rust on the rest of the body also, as you could imagine. I thought that the rear body was aluminium but there is rust on the rear portion too - below the rear window it was rusted through on a couple spot.

I think I am going to pass on this one, so if anyone is interested let me know - although i may have been sold already. I know there was another guy looking at it tonight.

I did not have the chance to inspect the frame in details, but I would suspect some rust there too.

This could have been a great project but I can freeze that much money right now.

thanks everyone for your input.

That 110 is one of the saddest things i have ever seen.
Looks like the Pacific air was rough on that. And i thought my 109 was bad at least mine is 33 years old not 14 years old.
