Reverse madness!

I am not sure if I am allowed to put a troubleshooting post on this board- hope I don't offend anyone.

My Tacoma is making a strange deep grinding noise in reverse- it seems to come from the front end. It's a 3.4 automatic DC with 79K. It doesn't make the noise if you just go slow but if you give it gas it will make the noise. Has anyone heard of this? Other than this, my truck runs like a swiss watch. I never have never had any problems with this truck so far....

maybe an engine mount is weak and grounding out against the frame.

when it's in Drive the engine will roll to the passenger side when you gas it, when in Reverse it'll roll to the driver side - that could explain why it'll do it in reverse but not drive

Good point. That very thing happened on my 02. I checked this weekend - all looks good.

I had that happen when a small stone was lodged up against the motor...same principle as a worn mount, but sneakier. Only in Reverse.

I hope not. I am replacing the front inner cv boots this coming weekend I will take a look.

If it's time to replace the diff fluid anyway, get a paint filter from your local hardware store & use it to filter the gear oil as it drains. This will help you figure out if anything is wearing abnormally by catching any chunks or metal slivers that might be in there. Oh yeah, drive it a few miles first to get the fluid warm, it'll drain better & flow through the filter easier (though you may still need to put the plug back in to let the fluid level in the filter go down).
