One of the reasons I wanted the 1HZ inline 6 non turbo toyota diesel is that there are so FEW things to go worng that would strand me.
Sure there are things that will make it run worse like valve adjustment being out, or weak injection pump but for the most part there just are many fatal parts. And NO electronics needed.
I carry a spare fuel filter, spare belts, the air filter is washable, spare oil filter and I am ordering spare gaskets in case I need to open things up. Also I am ordering 2 spare complete hose kits, I will replace everything when they get here and carry the rest.
Other than that I have read through the parts thread on ih8mud and it seems like most other bits can be sourced almost anywhere there is a NAPA or toyota dealer or a box can reach me.
The rig is also a manual trans so I can bump start and I hope have aleast 1 good gear to get me to some kind of town.

These days I think if you stick to an older diesel simple engine/trans and keep up on the preventive maint you can travel the old with out too many worries.

Yeah, I would trust that diesel over the 6.0 you have in the Sportsmobile....

What is the name of the importer of Cruisers in the North again? Can't remember what their name or state, Montana, Idaho, Washington or something..it isn't TLC, something else...

EDIT: I found them, and now I remember. They are cool and all, just too much money for a 25+ year old vehicle, when you could buy new.
Every time I start thinking about doing it, I quickly talk myself out of it, too much hassle for what you get. I think the saying "When in Rome" applies well
to vehicles.

OK if importing a truck from NZ that is less than 25 years old is like pulling teeth from a chicken, then can you find diesal replacement motors, since the US does not seem to big on the smaller diesal engines for vehicles. Is any state side car manufacturer installing diesal engines these days.

I have been out of touch with the US for a few years, so would not have a clue.

Cheers

It is worse than pulling teeth from a chicken, it is illegal and you risk much. There are loop hole sin the system though, if you are a NZ citizen and a USA citizen there may be a legal loop hole for you.

Any engine not common or sold in the USA will have to be imported. Sure you can find Toyota 2Hs or even 12HTs or 1HZ, ect in the USA but they are super crazy expensive. More than likely you can find the same motor in Oz or NZ and just import it and save your self at least several grand if not more. For example 12HTs are going for what $6k unrebuilt take outs and a rebuilt engine is at $10k or more! That is just crazy when you can buy the engine in Oz for $1-2k and then ship it over here for $1k more.

This is why most conversions in the USA are v8 or domestic diesel. Not everybody has the cash for a diesel conversion that is going to cost $10k+ and that is if you fit it yourself! Even less people are willing to do any importing themselves.
