Roll top 101a1

This is my last build ,I believe I have everything I need in the trailer world for now,this would have been on my 416 from earlier in the yr but a buddy came up with this 68 101a1 in great shape an although I just did one a yr ago that was a rusted mess I went with this:

After I decided what I wanted,I started with a shorter rack;

Then came the dismantle, the frame was sanded an painted with POR15 an of course a new axle an the Pintel had to go in favor of a lock-n-roll.I ordered a 3"dia. Lippert axle with electric brakes an E brake bracket (I can't thank Redneck trailer supplies in Colombus Oh. enough for their help)

Now came the wait/// I needed a roll top about any size then tried to figure out how to make it fit.. Craigslist came through about 2 1/2 hrs from home a guy had a Pace Edwards jackrabbit cover from an old Chevy S10 for $250 after several measurements I figured with the right size truck tool box I can make this work,so back to Craigslist an trip back to Columbus Oh. I believed i had everything.

After studying ToRo13s build which I think was the coolest 101 build I've seen,I wanted a swing open tailgate, I have a set of Jeep JK hinges hinges from a previous build I was planning on using but decided to just by weld on hinges..

Now back to the disassemble for some Liner Extreme in the bed an tailgate an final rolltop/box install

The down side to this setup is you basically lose the use of the bed past the wheel wells because of the roll top box you can slide chairs or something flat but that's about it.

With the top about finished now came the exterior.I had some smoke grey from a previous build, I thought I'd go with.. My big regret on this was, even though I just finished a 416 build I had a 4 day trip coming up an really wanted to take this,so my prep wasn't what it should have been,I sanded it but it wasn't stripped like it should have been.. I did have a little grey rino liner left I put on the front to hide sand an grinding marks but went basecoat/clear coat with the rest an I also copied my buddies Morris mule design for water carriers up front.

To wrap up this build I was able to top it with a Tepui Kukenam I found in Columbus Oh an make up a roof top spare tire mount an get it loaded for a trip to Couldersport Pa for the yearly Eastern traditional archery shoot..I was pretty nervious since I never even towed it around the block since I changed the tongue an axle BUT it towed an worked fantastic for a 5 1/2 hr trip,It still needs a little work But I couldn't be happier....
