Camping with my family right now at el cap in SoCal. Below is the pic of the campsite with the two autohome's up and running. You would think we had pulled up in two flying saucer's. Seems like most of this trip is explaining what they are and how to get them.

Still kinda fun though. :jump:

still, if it was up to me we'd be 100 miles from the nearest shower. . .

Still good to have all the kids along.

have a great weekend all. . .

Oh man! I hear you Brother. Half my trip in Mexico last October was chatting with nice folks about that tent.

Does not bother me at all. Helps get people aquainted.

Did you do any diving?

no diving. with three little ones it's pretty much beach patrol.
surf was small, and the water was really cold.

El Cap and Refugio are great spots with the family, hope you had a good time. I'm up in Pismo. The roof top tent does create quite a few conversation, which makes it kinda fun. I love using it, it makes the trip much more enjoyable. Guy

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, it was a great weekend. No waves to speak of, unfortunately, but got to fool around in the water with the kids. First time pulling the AT with the 80. Worked like a charm.

We think we are going to hit carpenteria before too long. Any advice on that camp site?

I've been getting questions about the WilderNest for years. The older folks in class A and 5th wheels seem really interested when we stay in a campground.

the at is worth the investment! This was the first time we took the kids with the 2 tents. the second night was perfect, the older kids crashed in the rooftop on the 80 and the wife and I and the 9 month old slept over the AT. Seems like a good solution. However, thinking about a screenhouse of some sort for the ground during the day. This is all obviously for the family camping scene.

any suggestions by anyone on a solid screenhouse solution?

Yea, "The Spot" on Linden right opposite the park. One of the best burger joints in the West.
"Mi Fiesta" store used to have a pretty good Mex food operation. Large, good and not too spendy. Little bit of Baja ambience. Way out the north end of town on Carp. Ave. opposite a side street from "Bob's Garage" (larger bldg - easier to spot). Haven't eaten there in a couple years though. Heard that there's new owners.

Is that the 1800 Overland? Can you post a pic of a sideshot of the 80 with the tent mounted up top?

I have the Overland 1800 on my 80, but I mounted it sideways to open off the back of the truck.

Carp is a good camp site, if you don't end up in one of the asphalt sites with neighbors right next to you, always playing the music you hate at volumns that offend. The good news is there is a brew pub next to the RR tracks over by Linden, good beer and its on the way to the store.

Guys I have a dumb question with the roof top tents:

My wife and I were wondering how long they typically last. I assumed they would last quite a while but I thought I'd ask. Any maintenance involved in them? Thanks.

NTSQD Thanks, good info.

The tent on the trailer is the large 1.8 (as per their website) tent. The one truck is the medium, 1.6.

I'll shoot a pic of it in a few hours as I am dong some work on it right now.

805Greg, I feel you. We were at silverwood i the san bernardino mtns and at 12:30 am an rv rolled up and on came the compressor and the music. Woke up all the kids and was not fun at all. I guess that's what you get. Thanks for the heads up.

riverfever, about length of use. I don't know, I"m not sure since I have only have them for a few months. I think with proper care you are going to get a good long run, at least as long as any other tent you might purchase. In a lot of ways the storage of them is a lot safer than with a ground tent. However, I am sure there are more people with a great deal more info than I have about them.
