RTT Mattress

I know this has been covered before but searching didn't turn up the answer I was looking for. I have a love hate relationship with my RTT. I love the tent itself but the mattress is plain uncomfortable. I was wondering if anyone has any tops or tricks to solve this. Has anyone ever replaced the mattress with another? If so what brand? Thanks in advance.

I put a two inch memory foam topper on mine. The bed was the full bomb; I get sleepy just thinking about how comfortable it was. It does take up a lot of room, so pillows could not stay up there and it was harder to close up. Likely this put some additional stress on the hinges and made putting the rain cover on a bit harder as well. .

like above, i did the same thing. But honestly i didn't think the mattress was that bad! I mean, all those years sleeping on the ground on old foam mattresses and then finally upgrading to a thermarest. Now the RTT is like staying in the hilton!

Now with the memory foam topper it's dreamy!

I use an Exped inflatable sleeping pad on top of the mattress. Takes all of 1 minute to inflate or deflate and stays in the tent when packed away.

I've got a Tepui Ayer, which isn't a large RTT. I found a double-sized sleeping bag that fits it that I was going to use as added padding, although it wasn't very thick. So I recently found a 1-1/2" gel topper to go inside the bag. Unfortunately it's a bit too thick to leave inside the tent and close it up, but the hole thing folds in half and rolls up well enough to place inside a canvas bag. The bag then goes inside my trailer. It takes up room (same as my old ground tent), but that should really improve the comfort level.

It would be nice if the RTT allowed for a thicker mattress to begin with... The entire reason I moved up from a traditional tent to an RTT was to get off the ground as I'm starting to age. (How was it that 20 years ago I could sleep on the ground with just a basic sleeping bag but that's not the case anymore?!)

I think a lot of "fitting extra" depends on the model RTT. I had one of the canvas fold over types and i couldn't really leave much of anything up there and still close it. Now i have a clam shell style RTT and i can leave the topper, sleeping bags and pillows in the tent and close it fine.

I'm not sure what mattress Eezi-Awn uses, but the one in our old Globetrotter was very comfortable.

We use a couple inflatable pads. My fiancee has a Therm-a-rest and I use a 2" thick Cabela's Standard XL pad. Works amazingly well, and doesn't add thickness to the tent when it's folded up.

I'm using Therm-a-Rest pads under my mattress and it is very comfortable.

However, supposing I want to replace the mattress, completely, with something better, what am I looking for? 3" of what type of foam?

My Tepui came with a 2 1/2" high density foam pad, as do most RTTs. It felt "ok". I added a 2" memory foam pad (bought on www.overstock.com). now it's amazingly comfy! I got a mattress cover (waterproof cotton) to house both pads together.

If you were going to replace the entire pad, go with a 4" memory foam (what I almost did).

Have you used it while it was cold out? I keep planning on getting one to add to my mattress but see where folks complain about the memory foam getting hard as a rock when cold. I wonder how cold they are talking about? Doubt I will be up there with it super cold.

That was going to be my question. I use the tent down to -25ºC. Though I suppose I could have a summer and winter mattress…

I also have an additional 2 inch topper in my AirTop. It's more comfortable than it should be. :D

If you're going to be camping when it's going to get cold enough for a memory foam to get hard, even under your body heat, then 1-you need to rethink your vacation plans, as you should already be very familiar with what it takes to cold weather camp; 2) get a tent heater/heat exchanger.
.
Either way, you should be fine. ;)

Similar solution here: 3" mem foam mattress pad from Costco. Got it all stuffed into a single mattress cover.

Noticed the marble-soft quality in the cold... It got better the more conducted heat leached out of me & the wife. :)
