Saline Salt Tram November 9-10 (& 11th?)

Excelsior!
This is one of those last minute excursions that came about because of various astrological signs gaining precise alignment as well as more mundane factors like work days off, good weather and family permissions. :wings:

Where:

Swansea to Keeler loop, mild to modest 4WD. Should be cold (mid to hi 20s?) at night but no snow. There will be a number of hard hikes planned at altitude with no established trails to follow.

Inyo Mountains between Independence and Death Valley California

We'll stay overnight in the tramkeeper's cabin but must be carefull to avoid wear and tear. Bring a good tent anyhow as the cabin is first come, first served but I'll bet we could get 20+ sleeping bags laid out in there

When:

Meet in Olancha, Calif. at 9 AM Friday November 9th or optionally at the tram keepers cabin at 8700' Friday night.

One attendee has to leave Staurday afternoon to get his limo ride on the USS Reagan. I may stay through Sunday to explore a bit more up there.

Rough Schedule:

Olancha at 9 AM, gas up and drive over to Swansea and drive up the canyon
stopping to hike to some points of interest along the Saline Salt tramway.
Swing by the Burgess Mine site (9600') and eventually get to the tramkeeper's cabin for dinner.

Saturday, up early and hike down the Saline Valley side to explore the tramway in more detail. No real trail so hard hiking at altitide with steep grades.

I may leave Saturday night or I may stay into Sunday. No firm plans yet.

There is one modestly hard rocky area that requires 4WD as well as some areas with loose dirt and rocks on the uphills. A 2WD with lockers got stuck many times on the last trip so 4WD is a must.

Comms:

Ham Radio 146.520 simplex. FRS Channel 8 Tone 8. CB if needed

see my previous trip report for photos and details.

Well I made it home and to a computer before Teotwaki! I want to offer a pic of Teotwaki to start the ‘end trip report‘ part as he will not have this shot. At the top of a hill we found this pile of discarded bearing blocks, we knew we were close and the anticipation of finding a still suspended salt bucket is written on Teotwaki’s face. Now for Teotwaki’s pics and awesome narratives, take it away.
