Sand Canyon and Alabama Hills, California

Last weekend we went up to Mammoth with two friends, Callie and Greg. We stayed at Adam's condo in the mountains and took a day trip up Sand Canyon.

Here is everyone (except Garrett) in front of the Grape.

Going up the trail was great fun, following a 10 year old child on a dirtbike. He was having trouble and we all found it very cute when his rear tire dug a hole in the sand and you could tell that he was very flustered with us behind him.

The Grape in its natural habitat

Our arrival at the "unnamed lake" was a good signal for lunch. We unpacked and hung out by the lake which we named "Callie's Lake". Here are a few photos:

On the way back from the lake, unfortunately while Sam was driving, the tie rod broke loose. This means that one wheel turned one direction while the other wheel turned the other direction (as can be seen in the photo).
Needless to say, we crashed. We fixed it with wire since we were at the bottom of the trail (thank goodness) and made it back up to the town of Mammoth where we stopped at a hardware store for all the supplies we needed.

Post-adventure drinks and dinner at Whiskey Creek

The next day we slept in, made a big breakfast and packed some sandwiches for the adventure home. Why was it an adventure driving home? We stopped and drove through the Alabama Hills and on Movie Road!

From Wikipedia: (The Alabama Hills are a popular location for television and movie productions (especially Westerns) set in an archetypical "rugged" environment. Since the early 1920s, 150 movies and about a dozen television shows have been filmed here, including Tom Mix films, Hopalong Cassidy films, The Gene Autry Show, and The Lone Ranger. Classics such as Gunga Din, Springfield Rifle, and How the West Was Won, as well as more recent productions such as Tremors and Joshua Tree, were filmed at sites known as Movie Flats and Movie Flat Road. In Gladiator, actor Russell Crowe rides a horse in front of the Alabamas, with Mount Whitney in the background, for a scene presumably set in Spain. Star Trek Generations was filmed here in addition to Overton, Nevada and Paramount Studios. More recently, many parts of the films Ironman (film) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen were filmed here.)

Until next time!

Thanks! You need to get another map to properly do Movie Flat Road as it has a detailed map of which set of rocks were used in which movie...we didn't have it and just ended up crawling on the rocks and messing around on the dirt roads.

Map is available in Lone Pine, CA

Good stuff, thanks.

I know the Alabama hills well, but am not familiar with Sand Canyon?

Details, is that near Mammoth?

Thanks

Alabama hills reminds me of the Flintstones
Good catch! Flintstones was filmed there.

Coming from Bishop: About 1 mile before Tom's place is a road that you hang a left on (I can't remember the name since the book is at home). Take that a few miles with a turn here and there....LOL - totally unhelpful so I'll stop. PM me if you want info, but since I don't have my book, I can't help.

The books I use for my adventures are: AVAILABLE HERE or on AMAZON

ps: Trail is rated moderate. A stock SUV would make it; however, with a little scraping and maneuvering.
