SAW Rebuild...paging BajaTaco...

The 8-7/8" dimension is what I used when rebuilding Chris's old set of 2.0's - they are working fine. I have the nitrogen set at 205 PSI.

Kartek used to have one of the shock "gods" but hes been gone for years.
I second the NO air comment. If there is even a TINY bit. the shocks performance goes to hell and it will cook faster. Burnt shock oil smells as bad as death.
I think he's the one there was some not so good rumblings about on rdc. Good enough guy, just over-commited and the whole deal fell apart with some unhappy people left in the wake.

"1699 Team SOAZ" as in 1/2-1600?

BTW, I've got a local source for that trick Schrader chuck for charging shocks that doesn't loose any charge pressure if anyone is interested. Roughly $45 each for either -3 or 1/8"NPT

Yep. 2-1600.

Yep, thats the one. He went and started his own Co.
It was nice when all of the mikes were back at kartek. I got along well with Baja Mike and we'd trade discounts.

Is that the one with the gauge on top, and the screw-down pin for the valve? Or different? Might be interested, got a pic?

...These shocks are just not cooperating. Got a chuck yesterday (liquid filled gauge, etc) that the Kartek guys swore up and down would do the job, the flats on the lockdown nut interfere with the shock body. We're machining some relief for the nut, but...talk about overkill, all I wanted was a nitrogen charge ! At least this way I KNOW I can use a decent chuck. The guy I talked to at SAW agreed it should work fine and wouldn't affect holding pressure, since it's nowhere near the interface between the threaded body, o-ring and anodized head of the shock.

FWIW I didn't mean charge them with air ;)...just heard from a couple people a while back that a SCUBA shop might be able to dispense straight N2.

Chris I figured that was the SAW number but these shocks have a slightly longer body and 6.5" of travel, not sure if the numbers would be the same...?

Oh and cooked shock oil...! I had to open the garage door when I popped these open. It smelled hideous.

No gauge. These are Schrader p/n 557 (for the 1/8NPT), but there is no pic of it that I can find on the mfg's site. They are essentially a banjo fittings where the 'bolt' has female threads that engage those on the valve body. Then there is a screw-in pin in the center that opens the actual valve.

N2 isn't breathable by itself so I'd be surprised if a scuba shop could supply it. Regular welding shops can supply it.

hahaha!
Only an expo member could cook shock oil!!!
We used to open the shocks that people sent in for rebuilds and they looked like the seals had finally seated, but the shock was as good as new. The only shock oil I've seen cooked is from race vehicles!
GOOD JOB BAJA! That must mean you are covering some serious miles, and at a good clip too!!!!!! :friday:

******** BT & SOAZ! It looked just like that, and smelled like...whooooo. I don't even know how to describe it, but MAN did it STINK :Wow1:.

that sounds like what I have here, sort of. I'll throw a pic up tonight of what I have at the moment.

...and the shocks are ready :jump:. hopefully the carnage at the machine shop wasn't too bad. One of the Schraeder valves was siezed and broke off during removal, had to be replaced.

Pics

The machining worked out great! Now I can use this trick little chuck to do the job in the future :D.

Shock body is ~10" long not including the seal cap, 6.5" travel on the shaft.

The part I found locally is the chuck shown in your second pic, minus the black ano'd hex piece and the gauge. I'd own the -3 AN/JIC version of the chuck if my loose regulator was good for more than 80 psi max. That is the crux of my research, few Victor regulators have a working range above 200 psi. Makes me wonder if people are over-driving their regulators or......
