series roof cutting into modular sections

has anyone seen or have pics from the internet of a series roof that has been cut to make it modular?

I am looking to convert a roof to make it into 2 or 3 pieces cut left to right side and make each section removable on its own. to be able to remove the front section on nice days and leave the back section if its holding a roof rack or leaving the front section on and removing the rear section..you get the idea.

the cutting is easy, just trying to figure out how to join each section to the next and have a good seal

also when cutting the sheet aluminiumand rejoining, would it be better to weld or to pop rivet for better strength, not sure how the rover aluminium deals with welding and cracking..

Sorry no help here but interesting concept. I will follow this closely to see what is thrown out here. However word of caution. Series are inherently leaky - I think it was in the specification ;) - so are you sure you want to provide more opportunity? ALso I wonder if you could accomplish the same with a soft top? Minus the roof rack.

Series stuff is becoming increasingly harder to find. Unless you could find a top that has already been cut or has some type of damage, ... I would stray from hacking up a top.

I have seen a soft top with clamp on bars added to support a roof rack and the soft top amended to fit.

Of course that is just my take on the situation.

I also saw a safari top once that had the top cut and a soft roll back canvas top cut into the top UNDER the sun shield. The sun shield was modified so that it came off easily and revealed the soft roll back top (think old VW bus!).

It was pretty cool. Wish I had taken pics.

although they are rare, i dont think the demand is that great. i have had a 1969 5 door 109 series 2 for sale with a rusted frame and chevy engine for a couple of months for under 600 dollars and i have yet to have a call or an email regarding it. heck it even has a muncie 4 speed hot rod tranny in it that i am selling separately mated to an old advanced adapter conversion plate to mate to a series t-case.

so the idea is to use the roof for my project and sell the rest. i am a huge rover fan but somethings just are not worth the time to deal with.

I am not worried about existing leaks.

I am using this 109 roof to make a hardtop for my VW Iltis. the fit is near perfect just needs to be shortened by 27 inches and narrowed by 3.5 inches and she will just bolt right in.

the VW Iltis never came with a hardtop, only a softtop. although the softtop is great it is not fun or secure for long trips. with a modular hardtop i will be able to remove each piece when needed and allows me to fold down the windshield with out removing the whole roof and storing it somewhere.

I also like your idea of the soft canvas roll back under the safari cover. but this does not allow me to remove to fold the windshield down.
