I've never been fond of any electrical switch. I've driven trucks that just sat there and spun in 2WD after the switch was flipped. Eventually it did shift rather roughly. This was a brand new truck with low mileage on it.

I prefer a solid mechanical linkage where you can feel when it engages. The cable shifter above looks tidier than most and should allow the same positive feedback if done right. I think I'd run the cable in under the seat and have the levers out of the way.

That was my thinking too. My tcase is an NP233 (originally pushbutton), but it was converted to mechanical for reliability. I got the shift system from another Astro owner, and didn't care to re-engineer it, but with the flexibility of the cable mechanism, there are a lot of ways to do that actuation.

My only experience with a push button was in 97 with a new Chevy extended cab truck. Pulled over at the side of the road, right tire was into the muddy shoulder, and it wouldn't go anywhere. So I then hit the push button and tried again... No difference. Tried going forward slowly and then reverse... Still no 4WD. Managed to get out of the 2" of mud in 2WD and then it decided to shift. I wasn't overly impressed. My regular truck would walk in and out of worse situations in 2WD all day long. The Chev was a nice shiny car, but in sucked once off the pavement.
