Shifting to Diff Lock?

Quick Question:
Do you just move the shifter over to the left or left/up or left/down? I don't feel anything engaging.

When you move it to the left it should already be either in high or low range. If you are currently in high range then when you move it to the left it should engage the centre differential and a light on the dash should go on.

If you move it forwards or backwards that might help the light to come on.

Likewise when disengaging the diff, having moved it to the right you might have to move forward/backwards for it to disengage.

How have you tested it that the diff has NOT been engaged?

When I move mine, it goes left up or left down. If I just move it left, it goes in neutral. Move it left, then up/down, I bet it will engage. (I have a 96 Disco I)

It is in a box format.

There are three positions on either side.

Right Lower = High, Diff Out
Right Mid = Neutral, Diff Out
Right High = Low, Diff Out

Left Lower = High, Diff In
Left Mid = Neutral, Diff In
Left High = Low, Diff In

Or have I got this wrong? I've got a Defender 90 V8 Auto 1998. When moving between low and high range I have to hold the transfer box into the required position whilst moving between D/N or N/R for it to engage but then this also doesn't get used that often.

Some gearboxes don't have a Neutral, apparently but I only have experience of a Series 3, '84 RRC V8 5sp manual and a '98 D90 V8 auto.

engaging the diff lock is not very dramatic, usually no noise or different feel. As long as it slides all the way over I think you're good. I usually test it on a snowy road... my truck understeers when I gun it around a corner with diff lock not engaged, oversteer (fishtail) with the diff lock engaged.

High to Low range feels different obviously, this is the movement that usually sticks from what I've heard.
