Short Camp Pillows == Extra Legroom

I use the bed of my '04 tacoma as my sleeping platform which has worked out well over the last few years. My only complaint has been that my feet often feel cramped against the tailgate even though i'm only 5' 11. For shorter people (like my girlfriend) this doesn't apply. A few measurements last night confirmed i should be able to fit in the bed without issue so I couldn't figure out why I was getting cramped feet!

While staring at the memory foam pad and pillows I had one of those "ahah" moments. When you sleep your feet aren't at a right angle making you a few inches longer, and even worse, when your head is on a pillow you rarely take up the whole pillow width. Maybe you do if you've got a huge head, but mine is pretty damn big and I'm not even close. So the pillow actually shifts you down in the bed so your effective sleeping length is the width of the pillow plus your height from your feet to the top of your shoulder. this distance is too long for the tacoma bed! The obvious solution, resize the pillow to get rid of those extra 4 inches above the top of your head so your head is actually near the front of the bed!

all that talk but its really simple, break out the sewing machine, cut and sew your pillows (and cases) to be 4 inches or so less in width or whatever fits your head. you immediately gain those 4 inches in bed length with no change in pillow comfort. I can't believe I've gone 3 years sleeping in the back without realizing this. For anyone slightly cramped in your pickup or tent bed, this might be the best free mod you've ever done!

My current camping pillow, for side sleeping, is a block of foam (from a 'foam shop'), about the size of my head and about 3" thick. I've also used a child's size memory foam pillow.

What I've learned from sleeping the bed of Patch is that I need to insulate the fwd bulkhead. It draws a lot of heat out of either my head or my feet depending. I carry one of the cut-outs from fitting the bed floor with outdoor carpet as a place to stand on the ground in my socks as I'm putting on my boots. Found that simply putting it against the bulkhead makes a huge difference.

The inside rear area of my Dormobile is 4' X 6' so everything is a space trade off and I strongly prefer everything to do at least double duty. A pillow is a single duty item that takes a LOT of valuable storage space. I solved the problem by making a pillow from my coat rolled inside a sleeping bad stuff bag. Everything does double duty and the size is within my comfort range.

Took me several trips with my new bag to figure out why the inside of it's stuff sack was covered in a satin-like material. It is intended that you'll stuff something in it while inside-out for use as a pillow. Prior to that I used the "Truck Jacket" e.g. the jacket that lives in the truck for emergencies, as a pillow.

Where did you buy those?
I received one as a gift and so had to buy another. They are from Sharper Image and retail for $30 but I was able to find a new one on eBay for $20.

Just checked for you and apparently they have the queen size on sale for $19.95--they don't come with a stuff sack but do come with a washable pillow case.

Queen size--retail $99.95, SALE $19.95

They also have the standard size showing a sale price of $19.95 but is not in stock. Maybe they can match that price in-store?
