I just spotted this system in this ex-rescue rig for sale on Ebay. Cool, simple drawer lock system that keeps the drawers in place. It probably locks the drawer in position once pulled out. I'm guessing that square knob has a dowel/pin on the back that locks into a hole in the side of the drawer. Pull on the knob, pin pulls out of the hole, and the drawer is free. Cool that it uses the flex of the 1/4" ply to keep the pin engaged.
Simple, cheap, reliable solutions are always great to see. Looks like the builder put barrel latches and such on other, smaller drawers where there was no side access.
