So much of this depends on fitness and terrain. Over the last 2 seasons I've gone from a 23, to a 22 and now I'm rolling a 21 with ease. That said, I think a 20 is as tall as I go. Eventually, there gets to be a point of decreasing efficiency. The 20 and 21 are reserved for the fitter months of the season when I'm strong enough to roll that gear and stay on it. I'm sure next spring if I'm out of shape, I'll go back to the 22 for a while. So, yes, I do think one or two teeth make a difference but terrain will determine the range. If I lived in Phoenix where it's super flat these numbers would be more like 16,17,18.Didn't want to create another topic, but just had a quick question for you single speeders (specifically 29ers). I'm currently running 33x20, which is great for about 90% of the trails around here. For the remaining 10%, I'm trying to figure out how much to go up by (in the rear cog). 21 or 22? I have no idea how much that will affect the performance. Will 1 tooth make that much of a difference? I'm thinking of just going with 22T for those hilly days.
I run Surly rings and cogs These cost a few more bucks but are indestructible.
dont say stuff like that around me, it makes me feel like superman the ease at which i break stuff thats supposed to be strong.
