Sky vents

About to install a couple of sky vents.

As there are different sizes etc., wondering what are the issues when selecting and installing them.
My simple parameters at the moment are - rainproof, wind safe, with fan, insect-proof, adjustable opening. Anything else?

Is size an issue, after considering the mechanical sturdiness and airflow issues? What about rains and wind strength?

Like to hear from those who've installed one themselves and are having one that's posing problems?

Thanks for pointers.

I installed a roof vent 7 yrs ago in my van and did an installation write-up, though see the 2nd part needs posting or disappeared.

Vent I used: Fan-Tastic Roof Vent

Installation write up: Installing a Roof Vent

There are several different configurations (bulb top, clear, smoked,flat/solid like mine, etc), mostly 14" sq, which is standard opening for roof vents. You can get them with powered or manual lift and with rain sensors so they will close.

I chose to put mine at the rear of the van, and so that it open towards the back; better if leaving open a bit when under way. Though they say you can leave it open and travel and have it installed opening towards the front, no way will I do that. 75-80mph in west Texas will rip it back or weaken it substantially, I'm sure.

It's been up there over 7 yrs now without a single leak. Take your time, use the right butyl tape

Mine can be set to three different speeds and to pull in or exhaust.

Here's just two images from my installation:

I'll try to get the 2nd part up soon; sealing gaps with butyl tape and finish caulking.
