Sleeping in the cab?

I just found out that I have to do A LOT of driving/hauling here in the near future and thought it would be kinda fun to not stay in hotels during my trips (boss likes that idea too!).

Since my bed is going to be used and height clearance issues, using an RTT is out of the question. I do on the other hand have my back seats pulled out and a platform put in place where I keep gear, tools and medic bag. My thought is to build another platform up above it and use that for sleeping.

Has anyone done anything similar to this here? Any ideas or pics?

Here is a pic of the same platform installed in my last truck, 04 1500.

...and a picture of the truck from last weekends camping trip just for good measure :D

It looks like you are set just add mat and covers. For a cheap fix is Costco has a fold up mat that is 36" wide 4" thick and a little over 6' long and folded up measures 36' X 12" X 26". Cost is less then $50.oo. May alsco be found a Sam's Club or Walmart. Add a sleeping bag and you are set. I found that the baby wipes are a quick clean-up when camping.

The platform pictured will still be holding gear. I'm wanting to put another one 18"-24" above it. Was kinda thinking about putting in some slide out drawers for some extra storage of smaller things.

I have done the same with my Cummins Ram 2500. Removed the rear seat/seat belt assemblies and built a platform and covered it with tool box liner (which provides a really grippy surface so stuff I put back there will not slide around). When I need to sleep back there I have a foam camping mattress from Cabelas that fits on there perfectly.

But I sleep back there very infrequently, and I would not want to do that on any extended camping trip. There is just not enough room. For catching a few hours sleep on a trip it is OK.

What are you going to do about taking showers for work?

I have my own shower setup which consists of a 10 gallon bladder with hose. It's worked great in the past. Luckily for my job, jeans and company t-shirt are all I need. Worst comes to worse, jump into a campsite or truck stop and take a quick shower. I've driven cross-country many times so it's not a problem for me at all.

You're gonna be awful sore.

As for being sore, it's never been a problem in the past sleeping on the current platform as I don't really sleep straight anyway. It's 62 inches across (66 window to window) and I measure 71 inches.

I'm just looking for different design ideas since I have tons of space to play with.

I've spent many nights in the cab of a truck. Even spent a few nights in the cab of my Hilux once in -5 degree weather! My neck is still sore

If you build a platform make a fold out for the passinger side. Adjust the passinger seat all the way forward, fold out the platform and you will have quite a bit more room to stretch your feet out. I would use a bed roll as it is far less bulky than a matress along with a few thick blankets. You will be just fine--in fact much better off than spending the money for several nights in a motel...

Good idea, hadn't really thought of that. I'll have to throw that in the plans as well.

Craig, I was looking at our interior space of the Dodge a while ago and realized you could capatalize on ALOT of space if you could make the front seats recline ALL the way back and make the center console disappear. Ive been meaning to tear apart the seats and see what would make them tick for a 180° recline but havent got there yet.

BUT... my measurements tell me that with the seats down, the center console removed, and a raised platform (like you're looking for), it would yield enough space for a queen sized air mattress. Now tell me that aint cool! :wings:

Of course if we had a megacab, all we would have to do is fold down the rear seat and push the front seats all the way forward to fit a queen size air mattress.... no modifications needed......:Wow1:

Haha, don't remind me :p The Megapig is kinda what inspired this project. If I could get the seats to lean back, I'd be all for that. Might have to dig around and see if anyone has done it.

There is a set of seats in Madison for $100... might just go pick them up to see if I can modify them to lean back all the way.
