I finally realized Smittybilt released a 2nd gen XRC rear bumper and tire carrier for the JK. Not big news. However, I'm curious how the tire carrier works. It's mounted on a spindle/hinge on the bumper, and is attached to the tailgate, so it is a single latch system (the stock tailgate latch).
I'm trying to figure out how they mounted it in a manner that would be rigid enough to keep the tire from hammering around, yet would allow for misalignment between the gate and carrier; as the pivot points are not in the same location there must be room for misalignment.
Anyone own one that can shed some light? All I found by Google was some crappy product review videos that don't show how it installs.
I like the concept, wondering how well it works and how to clone it if it is worthwhile.
