Smog Legal FJ60 Snorkel Set-up?

Recently bought an FJ60 with 2F engine outfitted for the trail by a previous owner.

As received it has the Safari Snorkel intake ductwork installed on the pillar and through the right fender. Also installed (but not hooked up to the carb) is a 3FE bottom filter housing with Aussie lid (got an Aussie carb plenum and flex hose in a box with the deal).

As it stands now, the unmodified factory air cleaner is still in use. The 2F engine has not been desmogged.

Based on threads at IH8MUD, the previous owner wanted to keep the vehicle smog legal. He got this far before selling the 60 to buy an 80.

Twenty years ago I would have bought a non US carb and distributor and completely desmogged this thing ASAP.

Objectives:

1. As things stand now, I do not want to desmog the engine.

2. I will not intentionally cross water more than bumper deep.

3. Probable second battery installation at some point.

Options:

1. Remove the snorkel and 3FE/Aussie filter housing. Patch the holes in the fender and pillar. Run with the stock filter housing.

2. Leave the snorkel intake installed, and remove the 3FE/Aussie filter housing. Run with the stock filter housing. In other words, a fake snorkel.

3. Modify the 3FE/Aussie filter housing to accept the 2F smog plumbing.

4. Modify a 2F filter housing by: (a) relocating the intake "horn" to the right side to mate up with the snorkel supply line, and (b) relocate air cleaner smog plumbing hook ups. Would lose the hot air intake.

Where I'm at:

1. I tend to believe running a snorkel with precleaner will extend filter life in dusty conditions, and the stream I thought was bumper deep may not be. That being said, I'm still not dead set on having a snorkel.

2. The 3FE filter housing takes up a lot of space behind the battery. Is that a place to install an auxillary battery ?

3. Moving the factory air horn to the right side would free up space to left of the radiator for an auxillary battery (this would require eliminating or relocating the radiator overflow tank - the dominos fall).

I'm leaning towards running it with the snorkel and modified 2F filter housing with smog. Anyone have any experience with this as in is it practical and effective?

Sorry about the length of this - trying to anticipate questions.

Here is your set up with factory second battery in place with a canister and snorkel. It will all fit.

I like the snorkel on my 60 canister combo. Everything is built solid, works with good Toyota filters which seem to last forever. The combo also flows enough air to keep my turbo diesel happy, which I tested with a intake restriction gauge. So it will flow enough air for a 2f.

For the smog issues, you have many options, including swapping the air filter housings at smog teat time. I have seen people who have bought the factory air filter housing emissions stickers from Spector, installed and passed smog too!001-resized.jpg

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the reply and photo. The large filter housing has some appeal. I'm reluctant to partially desmog due to unintended consequences - something tells me desmogging is an all or nothing situation.

If I go with the large 3FE housing it would require adding some nipples to attach various hoses and vacuum lines. That stuff is doable and might give me an excuse to learn how to weld and/or braze.

Sidebar issue: Did you fab the base for the second battery or was it an off the shelf unit?

Jim,

Smog is complicated and I am out of the loop on desmoging a 60. I assume you know about Ih8mud. Do a search and you will a lot of very good info, and if needed, help.

For the battery tray, mine is a factory mount from a right hand drive 60. Attaches just like your stock tray, just on the other side. Spector and others sell them, but a guy on mud makes both sides from stainless steel for a very good price also.

I do hang around IH8MUD. There is a long post on how to properly desmog a 2F. As I recall indiscriminately disconnecting a few things can cause problems.

Good info on the battery tray - thanks.

Jim,
I am under the same name over on MUD and you can find a link in my sig there that has multiple FSMs but more importantly in the folder that has all those is a document that the great JimC (FJ40Jim) helped create that is everything you need for a desmog.
Really the option comes down to you and what your want is? Do you want a stock looking truck (i.e. no snorkel)? Or do you want something more "expo" looking? There are more than a few that have had good luck just relocating the 2F intake horn to the opposite side and running the line to the snorkel, Reevesci with Blue Marley comes to mind.

Doug is definitely the man with his diesel 60 goodness over there and a wealth of knowledge so if nothing else, have fun and start chopping at things, they will buff right out I promise. :D

Thanks for the reply.

"...a document that the great JimC (FJ40Jim) helped create that is everything you need for a desmog."

That is the document I referred to. I'm going to stay smogged at least for now. This vehicle is going to Colorado and I'll be surprised if the whole state does not require emissions testing by day after tomorrow.

Given the choice I'd probably not install a snorkel. But since its already there its probably less trouble to connect it up than to patch the holes.

Plus, I cannot abide the thought of running around with a fake snorkel. That is about like putting a six inch diameter fart can on the end of a one inch Honda Accord tailpipe.

Got to admit, I do like the "expo look". The FJ60 already has the: bumpers (TEQ bottle opener on the front), winch, roof rack, lift, 33x10.50 tires....it is a rolling expo cliche.

Regards

Jim
