So I broke both my rear shocks today!!!

I've got an 09 Taco TRD 4x4 with a Toytec Lift, Bilstein 5125s and on the way home from a project (10 miles out a rough dirt road) I notice my *** end bouncing around. I stopped to check, and sure enough, the piston rod on both rear shocks was broken right at the top. Anyone ever have this happen?? I've got probably 500#s in the bed, and I drive the dirt roads pretty fast, but no really hard slams or anything. If this suspension is this weak, I might go to a long travel setup.

sound like they were over extended or u compressed em to much. without a pic its hard to tell, but other then that i dont see shocks just breaking, must less 2 at the same time

I've been bottoming out with the weight in the bed, but not too hard, I would think the bumpstops would stop it before the shock rods would break. I'm 35 and have been off roading since I was a kid, I've had a lot of 4x4s, I find it really odd that both would break at the same time, I've never "broken" a shock before.

I vaguely remember the rods being extended (the piston rod threaded and then having a coupler with another rod on top) when I installed the dust boot, and I just looked on Toytec's website and the describe the lift as having "-----Extended length Bilstein 5100 rear nitrogen gas shocks for optimum performance on and off road" I'd imagine if the shock travel for the lift is being gained by an extended rod then it would allow for more droop, but overload upon compression. Am I missing something, I can't imagine Toytec would miss such an obvious problem.

The shocks are probably too long or too short?
Check the application/ part number.
You need to know the full dimensions when compressed and extended.

Maybe they sent you the wrong shocks?

Thats what I was thinking... shocks were too short.

We need pictures, you sure you weren't hauling 2 pallets of sod?

A

It's got a Leer cap on the rear, maybe 200#, a rack, maybe 250#, my ARB bumper and winch which I've yet to install...another 200#. A grand total of 650#, it's rated 900#s capacity stock, and I have Toytec add-a-leafs on there.

I'm going to go and take some pics now and I'' post later. I think I'm going to throw som cheap shocks on there today so I can plan out a good long term rear suspension...I'm thinking custom heavier Deaver 62" springs, with King or Fox remote res shocks and Timbrin bumpstops.

I often have heavy loads, but I don't want to sacrifice too much flexibility/articulation because I also offroad a lot empty.

What are you expo guys with Flip Pacs/4wheel popups using on for rear suspension?

Thanks,

Kye

Another, ...the right shock.

BTW I've got a really tight deadline on this construction project I'm on so I' runnin around/hauling with no rear shocks. I tried to get some cheapies installed today to get me by, but no luck. I feel like one of those chicano trucks with the *** end hopping!!!

You have to measure the extended fully drooped lenght or you rear suspension and then look at the compressed lenght or your stock shocks to see what range of shock you need.

yeah, Toytec is overnighting me some OME shocks)(all they had in stock) and will reimburse my billies when I send them back to them. After I get these, Ill measure the full compression/droop, and take a course of action based on the results.
