Soft Awning

So, I see a lot of these really sweet awnings on the sides of rigs like this:

And I think how nice it would be to own one on those solo trips with no tree cover, but alas, I can't affort such luxuries for my solo trips (those are reseved for family stuff).

Anyway, on our Fleetwood popup we have a canopy enclosed in a soft casing and attached via a rail channel like this:

Any reason I can't just buy some rail channel, mount it to my Jeep and have a dual purpose canopy? Obvioulsy I own one, so for me it's no big deal, but the pop styles are still half the price of the purpose built style??

I've seen a few of those in use, matter of fact I'm planning on buying one of the bag style awnings for my Truck Camper this year after seeing one on a pop up truck camper. Nice part is that you can slide the bag out of the aluminum track to go off roading, slide it in and roll it out to use it, and the only thing you'll need to keep it on the vehicle is the aluminum track itself. You may have to come up with some sort of attachment to keep the track secure to the roof or edge of the awning, but it can work without any problem, just watch out for high winds.

Yeah, I figure I have the same concerns with it on my rig as I do on the trailer considering some of the trails I've taken it on. Good point about taking it off for 'wheeling.

I plan to buy some rail and attach it to my custom roof rack when it's done. I think it will make a nice addition to my "camping in the jeep" situation.
