Solar controller

Solar charge controllers are cheap. I purchased a Morningstar unit for less than $100 and it can be set to agm or lead acid. The batteries it provides a charge to are worth much more than that . If your charge controller cannot be set to agm I would suggest that you replace it with one that can. The charge voltages and curves are different for lead acid versus agm so the short answer is yes. If a battery (whatever type) doesn't receive the proper charge, its life will be greatly diminished.:coffee:

AGM = Lead Acid.

Maybe you meant "Flooded" vs. AGM... The differences between each setting is actually quite small, but if the unit has a setting for each, by all means use the one that matches your battery (IIRC, it's around 0.1V less absorption voltage and disabling of the Equalization mode in the AGM setting, I'd have to look at my controller's manual again to be exactly sure though).

I guess you would be correct and the little bit of info I can find about the controller says lead acid battery and does not have the switching capability like a morningstar.

AGM batteries are best when they have a three stage charge controller that is matched to their specific profile. Since AGM batteries are quite expensive, I'd probably make sure I was doing everything to maximize their useful life and use AGM-compatible hardware throughout.

Can a solar charge controller made for lead acid battery ruin a Agm battery?
yes very fast, charge at higher voltage than the Agm can take . agm needs a lower charging voltage in order not to overheat.
also with agm a regular 70% discharge also will ruin them quickly
