SOLD
Location – Denver Metro, CO
Price – $32,000
Mileage – 69,600 miles
All the features of a livable camper while maintaining the off-road capability and footprint of a mid-size truck. Built to be as light as possible to stay well below GVWR. Truck improvements focused on on-and-off-road balance, durability, and capability.
The cabinet and benches are built from 80/20 and baltic birch plywood with a polyurethane finish. They are secured to the truck’s utility rails, and each of the three pieces can be removed with 4-bolts. Camper weight, including built-in cabinetry and appliances, comes in around 450 pounds. Full-barn doors make access and indoor-outdoor camping a breeze. Build features two benches and a kitchen unit with 13 gallons of water, 100A Renogy battery system with 100W solar, sink, and Dometic CR-50 fridge. Complete build list below.
Synthetic oil changed every 5k miles. Front and rear differentials filled with fresh synthetic fluid when we installed the ARB rear diff cover.
The good: The Frontier has been a joy to own. It’s an extremely reliable and capable platform with a powerful V6 engine. The upgraded suspension and locking rear differential have helped us to travel to some amazing places via tight, remote trails. The camper is lightweight, and super comfortable for camping without the compromises of a larger, heavier vehicle. Gas mileage is terrain and speed dependent, but is pretty decent; we’ve averaged 15-19 mpg fully-loaded on our trips.
The bad: Some desert pinstriping and minor offroad scuffs. Someone recently bumped into us in a parking lot causing minor deformation of the rear bumper and a shallow 1.5” crease to the quarter panel. No platform is perfect, and the Frontier does have one design issue: the front, passenger-side bed mount is thin and can crack (even without weight in the bed). We had it professionally reinforced in Arizona–won’t be an issue again.
