Leyland DAF T244 expedition vehicle / overland truck

For sale is our Leyland DAF T244 4x4 overlander. An ex UK military vehicle converted into an overland camper. This truck took us around Southern Africa and is ready for another adventure with new owners.
Comfortable for 2 people in hot/temperate climates. Truck is a RHD, 5 speed manual 4x4 truck with centre diff and hi/lo gearbox. Less than 25,000 miles covered and regularly serviced. Cab can seat 4 (2 jump seats) and a crawl-through allows access to the habitation box. I measured the fuel consumption over 18,000 miles and it averages 14mpg.
The box was built as a steel frame mounted on the OEM flatbed. It is clad with aluminium, 60mm EPS/PU insulation, then ply-lined. Thetford cassette toilet, hot shower ,350L freshwater tank inside, reverse osmosis drinking system, 126L wastewater tank outside. 450W solar panels on roof, 4x 110Ah leisure batteries. Propane hobs and oven, 3 way refrigerator, king size bed. Seating area converts into a second double bed. Large sink for washing up and plenty of storage throughout. 20L single coil calorifier for hot water heated from the engine (hot after driving about 20 miles, stays hot for hours).
Contact me for viewings or, if it’s still available visit me in person at the Adventure Overland show in Stratford-upon-Avon on the 20th September.

Base vehicle details
Leyland DAF T244 (ex UK Military)
Permanent 4x4, Centre-diff-lock, transfer case (low/hi range gearbox), Manual 5 speed
24k miles on the clock. Purchased with 3,000 miles on the clock. 20,000 miles covered in Southern/Eastern Africa. Oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles. Cummins 6BT 5.9 litre turbo diesel has had front crank seal replaced and KDP secured. In good working order, ready for another trip around the continent. Comes with various spares (oil filters, fuel filter, fan belt, air dryer etc).
Fuel tank: Upgraded 200L diesel fuel tank (brand new) was fitted in place of the original 123L. Hydraulic lines replace the old steel pipes that are prone to failure. Range on a full tank is about 600 miles and two 20L jerry cans (included) allow for an extra 125 miles.
Tyres: Standard 12.00R20 wheels with tubed tyres. OEM Goodyear G388 on the rear, front tyres replaced 6,000 miles ago with HiFly HH302 mudgrip. Comes with an unused spare chassis mounted (see pic).
Cab: Registered with 3 seats and a fourth safari seat is also fitted. Seat belts on all (3 point for driver and passenger, lap belts for centre and safari seat).
Outside: Painted in RAL 1015 “light ivory” (spare cans of paint provided for touch ups, Rustoleum brand). Some scratches and dents on the outside from our adventure.
Extras:
  • Air hose and regulator provided so you can inflate/deflate the tyres from the integral air system (no electric compressors needed).
  • Tyre changing equipment included (torque multiplier, socket, tyre-iron etc)
  • Side under-run bars and rear under-run bars required for UK MOT are easily de-mountable.
  • Spares include various filters, belts, and lots of bits and bobs for plumbing, electrics etc,
MOT is booked for 1st October but is valid until 31st October. There is no reason why it shouldn't pass and if essential we can defer handover until after the MOT to guarantee 1 year. Because of COVID and the DVSA truck MOTs are in short supply so I can't get one sooner.

Habitation box details

Functional and comfortable. We lived in it for 12 months. Some scratches and dents on the outside walls of the habitation box which are merely cosmetic.
Construction:
Steel frame built on OEM load bed. This structure has been proven off road in Africa.
  • 60x60x3mm steel box section frame with 1.2mm aluminium cladding with a layer of closed-cell neoprene in between to prevent galvanic corrosion.
  • Aluminum skin riveted with closed stainless steel rivets (no water ingress).
  • Insulated with 50mm EPS and PU expanding fire-retardant foam - Inside cladding made of 12mm hardwood ply (9mm for ceiling).
  • Double glazed opening uPVC windows. Side windows are flush mounted (no lip to catch branches)
  • Habitation box bolted and welded onto original load bed
Electricity: 2x225W solar panels on roof keep batteries charged via a 30A MPPT controller charging four 110Ah leisure batteries - Electricity used to power lights, fridge, heater, and the water pump. Manual switches fitted for water pump, fridge and heater. Four lighting zones: living area, bedroom reading lights, bathroom, and kitchen (above sink and counter). All lighting zones are remote control so you can turn them off from in bed. A Victron 250W inverter is installed to charge laptops, phones etc. A Victron battery balancer ensures the 24V battery system stays balanced while charging and there is also a 20A 24V to 12V converter for the fridge and diesel heater.
Water: Sink and shower on board - High quality SeaFlo marine water pump connected to 350L water tank (mounted inside box envelope, under bed). Hot water tank under seating area connected to engine heater matrix and heats water while driving (about 20 miles and it's hot). 126L waste water tank fitted to the chassis under the truck - Fresh water tank can be filled in both through the inside and the outside (hose provided). High quality 20L single coil calorifier made by Surecal with a thermostatic valve mixing hot+cold to warm so you get plenty of water for showering and washing up.
Drinking water: A 7 stage reverse osmosis system filters tank water into a 5L tank for safe drinking and is dispensed from a smaller tap on the right hand side of the sink. You can safely drink lake water through this system (and I have).
Heating: 2Kw Diesel planar air heater mounted in a box under chassis with ducts into galley and bathroom. 10L diesel tank mounted on mudflap could be plumbed into the main diesel tank but I prefer to see and monitor fuel usage. This can heat the truck in very cold conditions.
Kitchen: 4 gas hobs and gas oven (Cara Spinflo) connected to 9kg gas bottle (POL105 connector) via bulkhead mounted regulator. Small gas “cupboard” with drop vent by the door in case of leak and valve to cut off gas supply from inside. An additional spur and valve allows for outside BBQ connection with orange rubber hose.
  • Shelved storage throughout with plastic boxes under kitchen cabinet and elastic straps for overhead - Aluminium backsplash on both kitchen area and around sink.
  • Electrolux RC1600 12V 3 way fridge (12V, mains, propane)
  • Monoxide detector is present for peace of mind.
Bathroom: Shower and Thetford cassette toilet with manual flush. The cassette is large and is removed from outside the truck.
Seating area: 2 benches can seat 4 (or maybe 6) people. Seating area converts to a second double bed (cushions lay out into a double mattress). Water and electrics stored underneath with plenty of space for storage.
Bed: UK King size bed with raised slats. Cupboard at feet of bed for additional storage. Accessibility made easier with steps that double up as a bookshelf. There is a large wardrobe and storage area under the bed in the rear overhang. This space is huge and we used it to store our spare bedding etc.
Crawl through: Crawl-through into the truck cab in seating area lockable from inside habitation box with a padlock (fewer worries when parking in town or shipping RoRo). Great for national parks where exiting your vehicle is prohibited or where wild animals are outside the vehicle. The cab is a tilt-cab so a rubber accordion seal connects the cab flange and the habitation flange. Some bolts hold them together which can easily be undone to raise cab for servicing.
Windows: Three windows have survived overlanding in Africa and large altitude changes. They all open and mosquito nets attach with velcro to the sides to keep the mozzies out.
