Solo/single person RTT available?

I explore with a Suzuki Samurai, and my past couple of trip have seen me use an oversize Kamp-Rite Tent-Cot for sleeping. Works great over a regular ground tent, and I refold it and strap it down to my roof rack...

But what I'd really rather have is a single-person RTT. But I'm unaware of anyone that makes such a beast. I have limited roof rack room on my Sami; hence my desire for a small package.

Anyone have any insights? Is there anyone that makes custom RTT's?

Thanks in advance.

(I did try to search before asking here...)

Most manufacturers have 1.2m width models that a couple of inches shy of a full-size mattress. EEzi-awn and Howling Moon specific call them 1.2m, whereas most of the other manufacturers have them as a separate line (Tepui Ayer is 42in, CVT Mt Bachelor is 48in, etc.) They usually have something like a 4ft x 4ft folded footprint. Is that too large for your application?

There is some guy on this board, I can't recall the username, that took basically what you have and is using it AS a RTT. I think it is permanently mounted on a small off road trailer, so he has some way to climb up to it I think.

With some ingenuity, you might find a way to hard mount what you have to the roof, and come up with a ladder to get to it perhaps? Just an idea.

Yeah, I've toyed with using what I have, but there are some issues...

First, the Tent-Cot can't be folded up with a sleeping bag and pad left inside, like most RTT's can. Second, the oversize model like I have uses two fiberglass rod that are arched under compression to pull up the center of the tent, for a little more headroom inside. Fishing those rods in and out thru the loops while the thing is on the roof might be a challenge, whereas most RTT's look like they have enough room to sit up inside. Last is the separate rainfly that the tent-cot has. It's easy enough to take on and off while it's on the ground, but mounted up in the air might be a challenge too...

If I do go the tent-cot route, I'll probably use the next smaller size unit, which doesn't have the fiberglass rods. But still has the issues of the bigger tent-cot re: foldability...

Sorry, I should have posted this in the RTT section.

Moderator, please move to the correct sub-forum, if you would... Thanks.

I agree it's spacious but really for 1 otherwise it gets pretty romantic with 2. I only use it when I go out by myself. If the wife comes we leave it and bring a big ground tent.

I just emailed Autohome US about a week ago asking for a true one man hard shell RTT. I received an email from a guy named Andrew. He stated "I'll see what we can do".

I have been looking for years with no luck. If anyone finds one let me know. I suggest you email them as well. The need is not very great, so they need to know people are interested.

I called James Baroud a year ago or so expressing my interest. I think it is cost prohibitive to design a new product that doesn't appeal to many people.

Good luck on your hunt!
