Besides the obvious of putting it in bed or buying outside carrier. Is there an expo work around for putting a matching spare (285/75/16) in the stock spare tire position? Rubs on the exhaust now.

This is on a Chevy, but you get the idea. No need to buy a new muffler.

Here is a Tacoma example

or, you might just need a drop down exhaust bracket, i am not sure about the 2nd Tacos,
but on the 1st gen, this bracket is used to clear and aftermarket spring-pack, it might be enough to clear the tire

My spare tire's been up against the pipe for years. Sometimes I shove it away with my foot but it keeps moving back. There's a burnt cavity in the tread--the tire kind'a clearances itself. I may have to look into changing the exit though--that's a good idea.

Simple exhaust re-route would be your best solution, not really a big fan of just cutting exhaust and blowing hot exhaust under truck on axle or in front of rear tire. Especially on a vehicle that would be moving slowly or just sitting idling in the backcountry. But that is just me:)

I had my '76 F250 routed like this, the rear wheels got a little dirty sooner than later, no biggy though. never smelled the exhaust while idling. it exited
both sides of the truck. I am still alive, so....I am used to sucking 2-Stroke exhaust all day, I may not know any better. ;)

You can re-route it through the beside too, helps it from getting smashed.

Thanks for the pictures Kermit. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

You're welcome, and good luck with it.

Could have an exhaust shop make you a new piece that bends out of it the way of the tire, if you still
want it to exit behind the tire.

x2. There are lots of reasons to not dump your exhaust under your vehicle: Carbon monoxide poisoning, heat damage, etc. Rerouting the exhaust in front of the rear tire is probably a safer option.

I would definitely route it out the side before the axle. If you have sliders already, have the exhaust shop burn an old spring u-bolt around the pipe (with some clearance) to keep it from getting smashed.

Our Chevy C7500 dump truck had it from the factory, exiting under the truck. It isn't as bad as one would think.

IIRC our F350 dumps were the same. Having it exit behind the tire, the pipe would get smashed backing into dirt piles.

On a tacoma, dumping the exhaust under the bed is fine. The truck cab is in front of this, so you aren't dumping fumes directly under the passenger compartment, plus, there is a space between the bed and cab where the hot exhaust can escape up and not enter the cab area.

I would be more hesitant on an SUV like a 4 runner, but I know many, many people who've done that mod, and it works very well on the tacoma.
