Anyone here do Sonora Pass?
That is my main deal from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We mostly camp in campground at Twin Lakes, but have been known to boondock in the Sierras. Have been going several times a year for about 20 years now.
Standard operating procedure these days is for the DW to drive the '92 Chevy 20 Tiara conversion van with whatever kids/grandkids we are hauling. I follow along behind with the kayaks on my '96 Toyota Tacoma with camper shell, yakima racks, 2-3 kayaks, and whatever extra gear.
While gas is expensive for two vehicles, we don't fight over who gets to drive, we can each blast our own music, I can smoke, and I don't have to listen to babies crying, etc. Also a two vehicle caravan is not a bad idea on such a challenging route with no cell phone service. Especially since both vehicles are older. The van has over 100,000 miles on it, and my Toy truck has 230,000.
It doesn't really require off road capabilities, but really reliable vehicles that handle well.
Here are a few photos of the Pass and Eastern Sierras:

This is the old rig. An '01 Silverado step side with a jayco popup that we wore out after a few season. Still have the Silverado. Thinking about a HD popup.

The van, but at Mendocino, not on the Pass:
