spare tire bumper swing away for FS trucks

Title says it - I haven't seen a bumper/spare tire swing out set up for our big trucks. But many applications are similar - the FJ60 I had used a tailgate and there were lots of swing arm tire and fuel can carriers on the market.

Is it just a matter of no market for it? So much of what is done with vehicles is based on style and achieving a certain "look", almost a fashion statement. Is this a bad idea or an idea that just isn't in demand?

Thanks.

Aluminess makes one, Road Armor also offers a swing out version. A lot of fabricators will also custom make one for you. The last page of my build "Waltzing Matilda" has a couple of options.

I need one but I just can't afford to buy an aftermarket version and I don't have the tools to build one. My spare is held under the truck with a spider web of bungie cords. Someday I will fix that.

If I remember right diy4x has a nice one they will weld up for a decent price.

I have had the Tiregate VT mounted on my rig for about 6 months now and have no complaints. I have another full size spare mounted in the OEM tire carrier position under the bed as well. 2 is 1 1 is none and all that. Pricey, but very well made.

My race teams crew chief made this one for me. It uses the factory trailer hitch and a second receiver box to mount, so it's removable.

Not the greatest pictures, but you get the idea.

I ended up using a Tiregate Hitchgate setup. It plugs into the receiver hitch and has a wedge lock and the hitch pin to hold it and keep it from rattling or moving. It still has a receiver hitch plug in and is rated to 7500 lbs. I towed a car trailer with a '65 C10 panel truck on it and it worked great. New they are a little pricey but I managed to find mine on Craigslist. Very happy with it until is end up building my own bumper after the flatbed swap.

I also made my own bracket that fits in the two bungs they have, to allow me to mount an AT can holder. Works great!

That Hitchgate looks exactly like the solution I need for my '89 Dodge Cummins, as I had been looking at $1500.00 or more for a bumper with a swingout for the tire & a jerry can.

This is less than half that, and has the beauty of being moved from vehicle to vehicle if I need to do so.:coffeedrink:

That is one definitely advantage, it will work on just about anything with a 2" receiver hitch. Originally I was thinking it was a lot of money (retail) but after getting it, it is very well designed and since it has a load rating, I feel better about towing then a one off unit. Too many times I have seen aftermarket bumpers with hitches in them and if you read the fine print, they are not designed for towing but for recovery.

Disregard, my dumb *** missed the "Bumper" part of your thread.

Oh, no problem! That hitchgate is about the coolest thing I've seen lately and will be mine. Thanks very much for the tip. The only down side I can see to it is camping inside in winter - it would be pretty drafty. But it's a great piece of kit for 8 months of the year.

Mine is made by Kennesaw Mountain, cheap price (compared to others that is), but definitely needed some finish work to finish it off. Mine has a removable jerry can holder that I only use when I am away on a trip.

After returning from Baja,my wife noticed that our spare was sitting at an angle on the driveway. The stock hoist had failed apparently close to the house thank goodness. Dealer replaced under warranty. After that,I used ratchet straps to supplement the hoist in securing the spare to the frame rails on that 2nd gen and my '07. Should work better than bungies.

Thats a very nice looking bumper porkchop! Wish I could have found them before I put the time and effort into my current setup.
