Looking for an affordable option for carrying the spare tire on the back of my 01 E350.

Key word: affordable, please.

I'm hoping to find a place for the spare tire so I can mount a water tank underneath...

Problem with most of the ones I found is that they in some way used rear door or hinges to support spare. Wasn't sure door would be up to that with these big tires and wheels. Course, you could always go Alumine$$.

The picture above is the carrier for a late model Bronco. It was sturdy enough for dirt roads, and could probably work well for your application. You will need to reinforce the mounting areas for all the brackets so it doesn't tear the sheet metal apart, but I think you could make it work. The hard part will be making those brackets work since there were contoured to a Bronco body and not an E350. The upside is they are plenty strong enough to hold up to a 33" tire with no issues, provided you have that reinforcing on the body I mentioned.

So it seems the aluminess for a stock bumper is the strongest and probably requires the least modifying?
Wish I could find one used... (more affordable )

Yep, that's prob what I'd go with. Its also the least costly Alumine$$ option, and I was considering it when I was thinking about putting on 35's. Still got too rich for my blood though, so I just stayed with 33's.

I have seen some conversion vans with a tire carrier that bolts to the hinge and then through the door metal. Not good for big tires or rough roughs for sure!

Anyone have ideas on how to mount one 5-gallon gerry can on the back similar to an Aluminess system?

I agree with your first statement, which is why I used one of those racks to answer your question:

Mounts a jerry can, my propane, and a trasharoo.
Build details here.

Was cheap and works for now, but eventually I'll be wanting to get my spare tire out from underneath as well for the same reasons...
