For those with their spare tire in the stock location.
Getting the handle end set in the lowering screw can be a pain. This guides it in well:

Made it. Home Depot sells like two foot square sheet metal. That's why I posted the drawing for anyone else to use as a guide. Getting those arcs right can be difficult. I always had trouble getting that handle set into the screw and thought, there could be worse places I could be trying to get my spare down than my driveway.

Interesting. My Astro (and I assume some/all of the other GM products that use the tire "winch") already has a guide tube. I have to open my rear doors to access it, though. The other bummer is that the tube is pretty much sized for the stock jack tool... This does make me think about trying to mod it to make it compatible with some other tool I'd rather be carrying... hrm.

This was exactly what went through my head when I tried for god knows how long to get that thing down when I had to change a tire. That's why I didn't put it back up there. This is a very handy mod, thanks for posting it!

If you should you make one and the thought of a rock getting stuck in there occurs to you, (an unlikely event) there is plenty of room to get your hand up there to clear anything out.

It works well and I can't find any drawbacks so far. I sent it to Toyota about a month ago. There must be some reason for them not doing this. Seems like a cheap easy fix to what is quite an annoyance.
