Spot VS Delorme VS ??

I want to have something in case of emergency when off the beaten path.

Im looking at the Spot and was wondering if there is any benefit to the different generations.

I can get a gen 2 for really cheap on ebay and was wondering if the gen 3 is worth double plus the money?

and the services provided. im okay with the spot basic at 99 bucks service. I dont need tracking and i dont need the gps for anything other than getting emergency (life threatening service) and getting my buddies my location if something mechanical goes haywire.

thoughts on the best way to do this?

I'll chime in with what I know.

I have the Spot 3 since September, got it at Cabela's with a $50 rebate from them (which I never got..but I paid with gift cards so I'm not getting all worked up about it).

It works great for emergencies, and I like to have it on while out exploring to see where I've been and I can save the maps at home. The batteries last a while, and I have never had an issue with the signal.

I pay month to month for a year: I heard if you pay per year it's a PITA to cancel the service if you want to since it's reoccurring.

That set aside it's easy to use, fun to have, and worth the money in my opinion. I hope this helps you.
