Hello all,
I bought my 2004 4.7 4Runner about 5 months ago, haven't had any issues with it. I had the timing belt, water pump and thermostat replaced when I bought it, I also cleaned the MAF and throttle body, and replaced the plugs with dense iridium's about 1k miles ago. It has a little over 138k miles on it, and today while on the freeway doing about 50-55mph I came up on a fairly steep hill. I gave it a bit more throttle, and then a bit more (pushing slightly past where I would usually expect it to downshift) and the car started to sort of sputter. I gave it some more gas and it downshifted and no issues with sputtering or hesitation, the car accelerated as normal. I tried it a few more times, but the transmission shifted down and I didn't have the same issue. The truck felt normal on the street, I'm assuming because I wasn't getting into such a long gear? I was able to get it to repeat on long roads where I was cruising at about 40 or 50 (likely in 5th gear again) and then very gently starting to add throttle, once it got to a certain point it would start to sputter again until it downshifted.
Any ideas on what it could be? I've been doing some research and most people seem to recommend cleaning the MAF and throttle body and replacing plugs and wires. I can't replace the fuel filter without dropping the gas tank, and theres no CEL. I don't have a scanner, would it be worth plugging one in even though the CEL isn't on? I figure it might be one of the coils, but not sure exactly how to test them.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
