Margaret and I are planning our drive later this month from Maine to Perce, along the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec. Then along the southern shore to Matane and ferrying to Godbout, and down to Tadoussac for Christmas. From there we will travel along the St. Lawrence through Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa, and up to North Bay and Georgian Bay. Following G-bay shore south to Peterborough, than around to NY state. From there off to Pennsylvania and Ohio, then back to Maine.

Anyone have any suggestions for the St. Lawrence sections?

This is part of our research for a map project we are designing that illustrates Samuel Champlain's exploration by boat circa 1608-1630. We are stopping at the sites he frequented, and working off his journals. Hope to follow up with a spring trip as well, but the project timeline makes this a winter trip. Hoping to fit in some skiing and snowshoeing too.

We'll be in the Land Cruiser, but not planning on camping. It's primarily a pavement trip, but we are always open to suggestions. In this part of the country, a winter pavement trip can still become an odyssey.

Sounds great, I've wanted to explore the Gaspe Penninsula. There must be some backwoods to explore up there.

Gaspe is nice - lots of sea cliffs on the coast. Inland the Chic Choc mountains are pretty with lots of logging roads. Except for an ugly open cast mine (with its own ski area) in Murdochville.

From the waterfalls I've seen there should be lots of opportunities for winter ice climbing and spring creeking :)

We were there in the summer and the weather inland was inclement. There's no shortage of la poutine and nobody there speaks English. We don't speak much if any French and managed just fine.

Cheers,
Graham

Gaspe is a great area to visit (use to live in Quebec).
However, I must say that this is really the wrong time of year to visit. being so close to the St.Lawrence river, the winter weather tends to be more exaggerated and lots of snow.
