Still Need HELP - Starting issues, 2001 DII

There isn't a fuel filter on a D2. Not an external one anyway. There is apparently a "sock" type filter in the tank. But I've never heard of this being an issue.

I don't think the CPS would tell the fuel pump to turn off. The engine just stops running because it doesn't know what cycle it's on. The ignition timing would be lost way before the fuel pressure would.

I would just throw a CPS at it at this point. It's not that expensive, and if that's not the cause, it's always a good idea to have a spare anyway.

Oh, I've been thinking of throwing all sorts of things at it as this point! :mixed-smiley-030::violent-smiley-031::sport_box

Ordering a Crank Position Sensor today to install this weekend I hope.

Two other things come to mind that I offer for consideration.

  1. There could be a faulty or loose connection within the ignition switch itself that causes intermittent positive feed to the ignition circuit.
  2. Your alternator voltage regulator could be going out, causing spikes in the voltage that is burning out the relay(s) that work the most when the engine is running.

Best of luck. sounds like a tough one.

Glad to hear you figured it out. Was thinking it was the crank position sensor while reading this, I had exactly the same symptoms on my 944. I have been battling an obnoxious cold start problem on my D1 this last week after letting the truck sit in cold weather for a month while I was in Europe. Ordered new cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs an d hope it helps. Ugh, frustrating week!

Yeah the cold can be pretty tough.
I drove up to northern CO for a week of -10F temps and came home with a leaky power stearing that I have to address next! :Mechanic:

Cold is toughen stuff for sure. First time the Rover as let me down though. I think the culprit was some bad gas I put in it in the end of dpDecember that likely froze in the lines. The plugs ended up fouling and I broke a couple of wires trying pull them off theplugso decided to replace everything as preventative upkeep. We will see if that helps!
